Our County has been hard hit over the years, starting with the loss of the timber industry in the 80’s/90’s meaning less money for schools, counties and cit- ies. Enterprise bulldozed its swimming pool, no money to fix it. The Enterprise City Cemetery is a haven for ro- dents, no money to irrigate. Joseph, home of the Main Street beautification project struggles to keep volunteers to maintain that beauty. Jo- seph City streets are more potholes than blacktop, no money to pave. To the Editor: Our County is just starting to recover from one of the worst economic times in re- cent history. I read the Chief- tain 2/4/15 article, about a project being considered to build a bike path from Jo- seph to the head of Wallowa Lake. Five miles of path could cost $21,000,000.00 to $36,000,000.00. It was reported in the paper like it was mere pennies. Is anyone else shaking their head over the blatant stupidity of how to spend money? TAXPAY- WILSON: MVP honor questioned 75 kids are signed up for the latest swimming lesson, at a motel pool, taught by a volunteer. In years to come for two months out of the year they can practice this new skill and wave at the bikers riding on their mil- lion-dollar bike path, as they freeze their little butts off in the icy waters of Wallowa Lake, because no one could come up with the money to build an Aquatic Center. A facility that could be used year round by our entire community. Idella Allen Joseph ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Continued from Page A4 But, in reality, what does the honor mean? Probably the two best defensive backs in football today, Patriot Dar- relle Revis and ’Hawk Rich- ard Sherman, had no chance of claiming that honor this go. At last count, the opposing coaches had elected to throw one pass each in the direction of the other team’s top pass defender during the entire game. No accolades there. Jabberwock II columnist Rocky Wilson is a reporter for the Chieftain. LINDSAY KEMP Normally a double-digit scorer, Joseph senior Lindsay Kemp came out of a brief slump Saturday by tallying 12 points in the fourth quarter to help secure a team win. In the process, the 18-year-old earned Athlete of the Week honors. A 4.0 GPA student who plays no other sports at JHS, Kemp is recognized on the basketball court for her offensive skills and excels in garnering offen- sive rebounds. Too, Kemp is known as a team leader. When not on the hardwoods, Kemp spends many hours with her large thoroughbred participat- ing in dressage and eventing (horse jumping) competitions. A lady active in FFA, Kemp al- ready has been accepted at five colleges, received several scholarships, and has yet to choose a school.
