Thursday Morning PREMIUM Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan will answer questions on immigration and civil rights during a town hall event Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Pendleton Library Community Conference Room, 501 S.W. Emigrant Ave., Pendleton. This is a follow-up to the American Civil Liberties Union’s launch of its new offshoot, People Rowan Power. The ACLU describes People Power as “a new platform harnessing nationwide grassroots resistance to the Trump administration’s assault on our Constitution and our values.” Local People Power organizer Miriam Gilmer said the project seeks to find out if local law enforcement follows the ACLU’s nine model policies to observe undocumented residents’ rights and make sure federal agencies are not using local dollars and resources to carry out the Trump administration’s deportation instructions. She said the group would ask Rowan if the rule of policy is in place, and if so, is the sheriff’s office following it. “If the policies are not in place or not being followed, the local People Power organization will begin their campaign to get them enacted,” she said. The group also plans to make a presentation at the Pendleton City Council meeting Tuesday, March 21, Gilmer said, and to meet next week with Pendleton chief of police Stuart Roberts. For more information about People Power, visit www.peoplepower.org . NIGHT OWL STATION PBS ABC NBC CBS FOX East Oregonian ECHO — The ACE Car Club of Echo High School is preparing for the annual Memorial Day weekend car show in downtown Echo, and is seeking trophy sponsors and raffle donations. The ACE Car Club was established in 2002 by three ambitious students and Al Olson, the now-retired Echo shop teacher. The club has remained active for 14 years despite Echo School not having an automotive program. This year, due to low student counts, the car show is being coordinated by the Kiwanis Club of Echo. Proceeds from the show support industrial education at Echo High School, including a brand new shop and industrial arts facility now in the works. The show has grown from six cars in 2005 to 168 in 2016. The club is looking for sponsors for the unique and artistic trophies made of old car parts by students and community volunteers, in amounts from $25 to $100. Also, donations of items for the raffle and for entrants’ goody bags are greatly appreciated. For more information, or to make arrangements for donations or sponsorships, email Echo.
