SPORTS Tuesday, November 17, 2015 East Oregonian Page 3B NFL Cardinals take NFC West lead with win over Seahawks By TIM BOOTH Associated Press SEATTLE — The Arizona Cardinals cast aside the notion their fast start was simply a mirage of weaker competition. By winning in Seattle, the Cardinals added validity to what they’ve already accomplished. “We thought this was an opportunity for us to come in here and show the world that we are a contender, not a pretender,” Arizona corner- back Patrick Peterson said. Led by Carson Palmer, the Cardinals took hold of the NFC West race with a 39-32 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. Palmer rebounded from two costly fumbles in the fourth quarter that led to 12 points AWARDS: EOU also gets four all-league nods Continued from 1B WHDP E\ ¿UVWWLPH KRQRUHHV freshmen Kristin Williams and Miah Perez. Sophomore Hannah Bailey was named to WKHVHFRQGWHDPIRUKHU¿UVW all-league recognition. Perez, an outside hitter from Ellensburg, Washington, led the T-Wolves with 119 kills in conference play while registering a .267 hitting percentage that ranks her among the best in the NWAC. Williams, a middle blocker from Pendleton, led the T-Wolves with 43 blocks LQ(DVWSOD\DQG¿QLVKHGVL[WK among NWAC net defenders with .98 blocks per game. Bailey, a libero from Rupert, Idaho, had a team- high 207 digs and was third in the NWAC with 5.05 per game. Hobart was second on the T-Wolves in kills (102), hitting percentage (.232), aces (17) and digs (126). Also honored among the East Region all-stars on Monday was Pendleton High School garduate Chelsie Speer, who was named East Coach of WKH<HDU:DOOD:DOOD¿QLVKHG second to BMCC in the East with an 11-3 record. ,WZDV6SHHU¶V¿IWKRYHUDOO selection after earning the award four times in the South Region at Mt. Hood C.C. Spokane’s Jessica Schmautz was name Player of the Year. Morehead wins Coach of Year LA GRANDE — In her ninth season at the helm of the No. 9 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team, head coach Kaki McLean Morehead was named the 2015 Cascade Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year, while four members of the squad earned all-conference recognition. Morehead led EOU to its best start (16-1) in program history its ¿UVWHYHU RXWULJKW &&& UHJXODU season title. She boasts an all-time record of 180-78. Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Miller, junior setter Rachelle Chamberlain, and junior middle hitter Kasaundra Tuma earned All-CCC First-Team honors, while senior libero Piper Cantrell snatched All-CCC Honorable Mention plaudits. Miller had a breakout sophomore campaign, UHFRUGLQJ GRXEOH¿JXUH NLOOV LQQLQHRIWKH¿QDOUHJXODU season matches. Chamberlain is one of the best setters in the country, dishing out 11.26 assists per frame. On Oct. 7, 2015, she became the all-time leader in assists at EOU, and she has recorded nine double-dou- bles this season. Tuma averaged 2.37 kills and 1.13 blocks per stanza, and Cantrell notched more than 4.5 digs per frame. for Seattle, the second one scooped up and returned 22 yards for a touchdown by Bobby Wagner that gave the Seahawks a 29-25 lead. $IWHU D EULOOLDQW ¿UVW KDOI Palmer wasn’t about to let Arizona’s opportunity to open a three-game lead in the division slip away. He led an 83-yard touchdown drive, helped by a key third- down penalty on Wagner and a juggling catch by Jaron Brown that nearly became 5LFKDUG 6KHUPDQ¶V ¿UVW interception of the season. Palmer capped the drive with a 14-yard touchdown strike to Jermaine Gresham and Andre Ellington added a 48-yard TD run on Arizona’s next possession for the capper. Palmer threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns and the Cardinals won in Seattle for the second time in three years handing the Seahawks a second straight home loss. “I hope there’s another signature win, and a bunch of them, in our future,” Palmer said. “But it’s just a good win. It’s good to get this far up in this division, especially this division. But we’ve got to move on.” Realistically the Seahawks (4-5) only hope of getting back to the postseason is a wild-card berth that is wide open in the jumbled NFC. It would take a collapse possibly worse than a year ago for the Cardinals to let Seattle back in the division race at this point. ³:H GH¿QLWHO\ EHHQ through some stuff since I’ve been here so I don’t see why we can’t come out of this,” Wagner said.
