Sixteen hun dred striking streetcar employes re turned to work this morning, giving Seattle a street car service for the first time in lti days. No excitement ac companied the return to work. Acting in moving pictures has' an elevating moral Influence, says Va- leska Rurati, star of the new William Fox drama. "The Siren." Miss Sur- ratt's announcement is based on ex perience, for she has appeared In two photoplays for William Fox alone. "Moving pictures are still In the stage where the drama was before Ibsen." says Miss Suratt. "They have the oldfashloned Ideas about stage morality that demands that the hero come off triumphant, and that vir tue be victorious and crime go pun ished. Since modern influences set to work, the stige has partly given up these standards, but the screen still adheres to them That Is why the film continues to exercise a moral in fluence that the stage does not. James Dyer, the manager of the wild animal show received two new lions i yesterday and notwith standing the act that they have not been with this show for a year. La Belle Sallna. the intrepid lady train, er put them in the btg group last night and run them htrough'the usu al routine. At first the lions were a little ugly and the audience came near stampeding during the first part of the act where Sallna fights the lions. For genuine thrills, this little lady has them all beaten. Thi-t is society night and all the female performers will wear their best cos tumes. BAKER DENIES REPORT OF MILITARY DISASTER WASHINGTON. Aug. 2 Answer ing rumors of an alleged disaster to the American forces. Secretary Baker said: "I have no hesitancy in saying nothing has reached the war depart ment which would lead us to believe any misfortune has attended ouf forces on land or sea and can reiter ate the pledge made sometime ago that any such word will be instantly given to the country, subject only ta ttle qualifications that any military movement in process -will be com p let. ed.
