Houston Post. fact that modern warfare Ss not at all like Lexington and Bunker Hill or even Gettys burg. Nations now mass their armies and navies upon a mammoth scale and the equip ment used is 'something stu pendous. It is common sense policy for the United States to place itself in a fair degree of readiness for trouble in the event it breaks upon us. Yet loyal as they are Pen dleton people do not want war if it can be avoided with safe ty and .honor. . No sane Ame rican wants this country to enter the European war unless it is necessary to do so from an American standpoint. Those who want us to get into the fray for any other reason are not pro-American they- are pro-ally and their counsel is to be shunned. While the War cloud looms ominously before us and peace seems almost a vain hope the real storm has not yet broken. There is still a chance that Germany may recede from her ruthless submarine campaign and so avoid driving the Uni ted States into the ranks of the allies. The best hope of this coun try lies in the man in the White House. He is a sane and courageous minded Am erican. We may count upon it that under his leadership this country will sacrifice no prin ciple. He will fight if it is necessary to fight. He : will keep the country in peace if he can do so with credit and safe ty to the nation. Wait for what Wilson says and mean while neither be lulled to sleep by the ultra pacifists nor aroused to excess frenzy . by the over zealous war makers. Let us be loyal and back up the president be it peace or De it war. , . GERMAN WITHDRAWAL IN FRANCE 1BEAUMETZ ARRAS vBQUCHAIN I r - if V .t. '. VCROISILLES y VBAPAUME CAMBRAI l j ALBERT cjMBLES !1! The first lesson from the demonstration last night is that the people are responsive t the call of patriotism. In ' their hearts the mass of peo :ple are true Americans, ready 'to HKrve and sacrifice if neerts be in behalf of the nation's welfare. Our people have also been " wakened to the necessity of preparedness. The present war is bringing home to all the F Germany wins the pres ent war despotic govern ment under the kaiser will be vindicated. The cause of democracy in the Fatherland will be set back immeasur ably. Prussian militarism will become more firm in the sad dle with all that such implies. If Germany should lose the war there seems a good chance for the overthrow of the Hoheuzollerens and the estab lishment of a government by the people and for the people. In that case the common peo ple of Germany would gain more than they could hope to gam by a German victory in the war. In this respect the German people are in a situation where they will gain if they lose and lose if they gain. Germans in this country-are in position to see this feature of the situation more plainly than can the people in Europe. The fact, has a bearing on at- fairs between the Unitea States and Germany. The latest -official reports reveal that the British hare moved ahead on a forty-five mile line from Arras to Chaulnes. while the French have advanced on a line extending from Chaulnea to- Crouoy, about thirty-gev- - tt - en miles. The gain la .shown be. tween the dotted and solid lines, the greatest British advance being south of Arras and the greatest French to ward Ham. The names of the im portant towns pecupied are underscored. RITING in the Deutsche Tages Zeitung, the ta mous German militar ist. Count von Reventlow, says : "It is good that American I worth more than the views 01 ships have been obliged to learn that the German - pro; hibition is effective and that there is no question of distinc tive treatment for the Unitea States. In view of such losses there is only one policy for the United States, as for the small European martime powers. namely, to retain their ships in their own ports as long as the war lasts." In other words this man who evidently states the view of the Germany military party gives us preemptory orders to keep off the sea. It is a line of action unprecedented in his tory. The allies take no such high handed course. If they tind merchantmen with sup plies for the enemy they fol low the rule of visit and search not the policy of sinking on sight, relief ' ships, neutrals without cargo and all The German'policy is respon sible for the fact the United States is almost at the point jr aligning with the allies against the central powers. Germany has done more for her enemies in this instance than they could have done for, them selves in a thousand years. 1 Admiral Dewey, who knew something about the navy and about secretaries of the navy declared that Secretary Dan iels is the best secretary of the navy the United States ever had; is not Dewey s opinion the munition makers who like to charge two prices for ma terial, and worth more than the views o( those who score tne secretary as an old man because he prohibits the use ot liquor by naval officers on duty as well as by the enlisted men? Some of our eastern torie papers seem deathly afraid the United States wont have to go to war; it is an open question whether they repre sent the United States or the allied powers. With May wheat close to $2 per bushel in Chicago there should be no idle acres in eastern Oregon this year.
