Mettle, a well known homesteader, and that Mr. Mettle, to protect hlmlf, threw his coat over the animal's head and, thus holding It, stabned It to death. The Whitman College officials were pleasantly sur prised when a letter was received by Dorsey Hill, bursar of the college, from the American Surety Sc Trust Company, of Washington, D. C, stat Ing that (5000, which had been left to Whitman College by the will of Homer N. Lockwood, of that city, would be forwardede to the college as soon as the necessary legal ar rangements could be made, Just who Homer N. Lockwood was or why he was so Interested In Whit man Is a puzzle to the college offi cials, as no one about the Institution seems to know anything about him. He Is also survived by one son, Ralph Phay of Hermlston, a daughter, Mrs. Charles Bloom who lives north of Pendleton, and three brothers, John Phay of Wallowa, Elijah Phay of Detroit and George Phay, living In Minnesota, Sixteen years ago he Joined the Christian church in Eagle valley and has since been an active member. Rev.
