There was a liberal run of hogs In the local yards overnight, but the demand continues good and prices remain firm all around. During the early trade tops were quickly sold at $8.70, an advance of 5c. ' The market for hogs was generally favorable at most American points for the day.' The runs are quite fair, but there seems to be a general Im provement In the demand. Seemingly the country has come to the conclusion that It is far better to keep cattle at home rather than force them upon an unwilling market and thereby place prices at a lower level. There was practically no run in the cattle yards over night, totals being but a handful. A similar condition lias been shown all this week with the exception of Monday, when the to tals were rather light. K m m mt anU Ia Enumerating w hat he said were the important psychological and pathol ogical effects of the use of alcohol, Colonel Maus averred it "has been tho cause of countless unjust court-martial sentences against officers and men, of harsh official decisions and discriminations in assignments, of hopeless aspirations and ruined car eers; that it causes sickness, impairs health and usefulness, adds greatly to the non-efficiency of both officers and men, adds additional burden and cost to the medical department, deprives the Government of otherwise valuable officers and enlisted men, and forces them on the retired or pension list, with corresponding Increase of govern, mental expenditures. 'Virtually oil the crimes in the army can be directly traced to the use of alcohol. Most murders, suicides, robberies, court-martial and dismis sals of officers, defalcations and pe culations, duplications of pay ac counts, prison and guardhouse sen tences of enlisted men, desertions, diseases and insanity are due to the use of alcoholic beverages." He charged that, directly or lndl rectly. the present methods of re cruiting is responMble for a large class of undesirables in the army, who he said, "are gathered from the slums of our large cities, mainly through the incompetency or Indiscrlminatlng and drinking recruiting parties. Should the enlistment of this class and the use of alcoholic -drinks be In terdicted, the sick rate of the army would be reduced 50 per cent and its efficiency correspondingly increased." Statement from the Ministers whose churches have Joined in the union tabrenacle services. In order to correct a misapprehen sion relative to the purpose of the un ion revival being conducted in Pen dleton, led by Dr. Ehvood J. Bulgin under the auspices of the various churches, we the undersigned minis ters desire to state that the sole pur pose was to save men, and to promote the moral welfare of the community The revival has had a wonderful ef fect in creating a new public con science in regard to civic righteous ness. It has also helped to stimulate deeper spirituality among Christian people; and has resulted in the hope ful conversion of many who hitherto were not identified with any of the churches. While Dr. Bulgin in his at tack upon sin has, a a minister of the gospel, cried aloud and spared not. declaring the whole counsel of god, yet he has manifested the true spirit of Christ in his attitude oward the sinner. We emphatically deny that Dr. Bulgin Is here in the interest of any political party or movement, Having been associated, as ministers, with many of the leading evangelists of the day, we are confident that there is not a stronger preacher to be found. His expositions of the Scripture are clear, forcible and evangelical, and we do not hesitate to commend him as a men of God. thoroughly equipped In tellectually and spiritually for the great work in which he is engaged aa an evangelist.
