Trading Stamps COUPON I It waa a delightful evening that about fifty citizens of Pendleton and other parta of Umatilla county spent in the Commercial club rooms last evening on the ocoasion of the first social session of the Umatilla County Historical Society. The program of papers. dealing with the early history of the county and pioneer anecdotes was .most enjoyable and all too soon for the pleasure of the company came to an end. The reminiscences of Mrs. Nancy DcSpaln as read by her granddaughter Miss .Mildred Berkeley and of Mrs. Mary Disosway held the audience in rapt attention, giving as they did bits of real life in a romantic past. Mrs. Robert N. Stanfield opened the pro gram with a talk on the naming of Pendleton which proved very enter taining. . "The Early History of Pilot Rock." a paper by Rev. E. W. War rington was read by Miss Grace Gil liam and furnished some illuminat ing facta upon the pioneer days of the south end town. Another very Interesting paper was on "Early In dian Trails"' by Homer I. Watts of Athena. The general after-talk, led by Major Lee Moorhouse, was en Joyed by everyone. In keeping with the occasion, Mrs.. Gilbert W. Phelps delighted the members and guests by playing old, familiar airs on the pi ano. Refreshments were served after the program was concluded. Mrs. Mattie La Dow presiding at the tea table. Quests were present from all over the county and, altogether, the first social session of the society was distinct success. Miss Clara Tardiff, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. Edgar Thompson for the past three weeks, has returned to hef home in Port land. Miss Marie Struve-who has been visiting for the past six months with her sister, Mrs. H. H. Taylor, in San Diego, California, arrived home Wed nesday evening. The Current Literature Club is this afternoon meeting at the home of Mrs, Elza T. Wade on Bush street. Rev. and Mrs. George W. Kennedy, who were residents' of Pendleton in pioneer days, returned this morning to their home in Hood River, after enjoying a visit of several days with oldtlme friends. The Care of Children Sweeping seems such a simple thing that one might almost think little could be said about it. There are, however, many little details which serve to distinguish a good sweeper from a careless one, and It Is upon these particular points that the great est stress should be laid by the moth er .who undertakes to instruct her small laughter in', thtj -branch of do mestic science. - Nothing will appeal to a child and arouse her interest so quickly as to FIVE MINUTE CURE IF STOMACH IS BAD When "Pape's Dlapepsin'' Readies Stomach All Indigestion, Gas and Sourness Disappear. But in brief it ia as explained in Matthew's gospel: "The attribut ing the worka of Christ to the little rontemptable god Beeclebub, the god of files. To do this wu to destroy the last way of escape from sin, to break the last golden wire of hope to fret to God. They could blaspheme iod the father and creator, or Jesus Christ the Savior for their work was done, but the Holy Spirit waa still doing hit work and waa the last rev elation for God to men. To destroy that was not to b forgiven." Dr. Bulgln and also Rev. T. F. As announced the ser mon was particularly to businessmen, and the theme, "The King's Business." The text was found in 1 Sam. 21:8. "The king's business required haste." ' The evangelist said that the setting of the story was where David the shepherd lad had slain Goliath and was fleeing from the wrath of the en vious Saul, and had gone to the priest Ablmelech without food, arms or companion and asked for these same from him and explained the absence of such because he has hastened away from home on some urgent king's business which must be attend ed to and speeded up by any one on the way. Just because it was the king's business. "This was an oriental custom and is even true of us today. Men are not equal, they may have the same rights to live and make a living but there are different ranks, so to speak, anJ privileges granted to some that the other doesn't get. The king's rl?ht Is the collected rights of all his subjects. The United States Is you and I. The rights and laws of the United States has the right of way over you and me because It fs you and T In a bigger and collective form. So in this dem ocratic age men obey good laws which are for the benefit, protection and progress of all society. Th kin of whom, we speak tonight is King Jenovah, who is absolute monarch. You do not Increase your responsibility by becoming a Christian, you lessen It for now you are disloyal and hinder other subjects." Dr. Bulgin closed with an earnest appeal for all to come to such a sovereign. The audience was deeply moved and 12 or more were converted. Thou sands injure themselves by the use of strong cathartics, salts, mineral wa ters, pills and similar things They have temporary value In some cases. It is true, but the good effect Is soon lost and the more one takes of them the less effective they become. A physic or purgative Is seldom ne cessary, and much better and more permanent results can be obtained by using a scientific remedy like Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. It does not hide behind a high sounding name, but Is what it Is represented to be, a mild laxative medicine. It la so mild that thousands or mothers give it to tiny Infants, and' yet it is so compounded, and contains such defi nite ingredients that It will have equally good effect when used by a person .suffering from . the worst chronic constipation. In fact, am ong the greatest endorsers of Syrup Pepsin are elderly people who have suffered for years and found nothing to benefit them until tney took Syrup Pepsin. . i It is a fact that millions of families have Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin constantly In the house, homes like those of Mr. H. -W. , Fenstermaker, Slefried, Pa. Of course there are weak failures of mothers but the hero mothers out number them, else this world would be a sorry place. And this little message Is to any td every mother, no matter how discour aged and weak she may be, Just give the ,baby a chance to carry you to the great things God has devised for the mothers who follow his plan. You may know yourself to be of the com monest clay, but the baby can bring the divine spark out to Illuminate your life. Let the baby carry you to pa tience, to unfailing tenJerness, , to faith and courage. Do not let the crowd of petty worries that throng each day crush you down. They can be conquered If you learn the lesson the baby brings. Often we are amazed at people who give up a splendid' possibility for a sordid indulgence ot today.
