Agt. Portland AT THEQREGON THEATRE "The Squaw Man." In "The Squaw Man," which comes to the Oregon theatre Tuesday, April 30, one finds a play of the west re plete with types and characters of that region, and with a spice of nov elty that is far too infrequent upon the stage, f'trangely enough, for that is true, a drama that touches on the teeming strenuousity of the Wyoming territory, there is little of the swash buckling element in the play. While there is a bad man and a sheriff, an 1 several cowpunchers, one misses the rip-roaring, terrifying clash of per sonalities that is expected In a west ern play. In fact, there is no hint of coarse ruffianism so often to be found in plays of this description, nnd while the emotions ure stirred by many moving climaxes, these are safely sidetracked in an artistic man ner by the dramatist until they sat isfy the sense without shocking the nerves. Edwin Milton Koyle, who wrote the piny, has admittedly done the best work of his career in "The Squaw Man," which, by the way, was evolved from u short one-net piece Mr. Hoyle wrote for the Lambs Gambol in New York quite four years ago. He has built up, a drama that is of the heroic mould, and which moves steadily forward with an inexorable purpose until the plot has been filled out in a satisfactory manner down to the last detail. There is no point that is left uncovered, but just a good whole-souled, clean and satisfying picture of men and things that moves the auditor irresistibly and carries him along. It is a play that deals with men as they are, and points to the dormant something that lies at the bottom of every man's soul yhen there Is a woman somewhere In his life. While the first act is laid in England, the last three are placed happily in Wyoming, in the heart of the cuttle country as it was some 20 years ago, and the character of the British ormy officer, who for love of his brother's wife, dulibeately sad dles himself with a crime of which he is innocent and buries himself In th west, is splendidly drawn and ably handled. HARVARD LACKS ETIQCETTK. 8IihIhU at Table Throw Ilread at Visiting lrlnc'ton Debaters. . Cambridge, Mass. Hugh L.'Gaddis prominent socially and manager of the Harvard University track team, made the statement the other day that the students of memorial Hall took liberties which would not be countenanced in any other public dining hall. He cites as a striking evample the following incident: "The members of a visiting de bating team (Princeton)," says Mr. Gaddis, "were taken to the hall for luncheon as guests of the members of the Harvard team. Innocently enough, after luncheon they were cordially received in the aisle by friends. This incured the displeasure of some at a nearby table, who, not recognizing them as absolute strang ers, threw a piece of bread at them. Others did likewise, and the party was literally driven from the hall. "Inorance of the identity of the men," he concludes, "does not excuse such a disgraceful procedure, which deserves the unmitigated condemna tion of all fair-minded men." Girl Slayer Sails.
