C Koeppen & CrJ. Washington, D. C, April 1. (Spe cial.) The situation In the democrat ic presidential contest has not chang ed materially in the past few weeks excepts that linea then dimly discern ible are now standing out in bold re lief. The situation is that Woodrow Wilson is the leading candidate. In fact the only national candidate for the nomination; Chat the. opposition to the New Jersey governor practically concedes that he will mave a majority of the delegates when the Baltimore convention assembles, and therefore! bases its- whole hope on the two- j thirds rule; and that the principal op-( ponents of Governor Wilson, namely i Speaker Clark, Governor Harmon and! Chairman Underman are united in an alliance of desperation hoping by their combined efforts to prevent Wil son's nomination on the first ballot. The friends of Governor Wilson reaiize that they are fighting oppos ing candidates but a combination of opponents and the struggle between the New Jersey executive on the one side and the "allies" on the other is now on. A mere general denial of the exist ence of this dreibund does not dispose of the matter. It U obvious that no candidate would admit it, and it is entire'v possible to form any alliance without any direct negotiations. Governor Wilson is a candidate in every state In the Union on his frank and full declarations of principles and his record as governor. The allies have divided the field against him territorially and otherwise. For. instance, In Texas where the division of opinion between progres sives and reactionaries Is well mark ed, the Clark and Underwood man agers gracefully retire In favor of Govenor Harmon. In Kansas, where the progressive sentiment is over tthelmlng. It was Speaker Clark who was pitted against Governor Wilson. I TRI-STATE LEAGUE Walla Walla, Wrash.. April 1. With Northwest league baseball further away than Mt ever was before, all attention is now being given to the new league as proposed at the Commercial club recently by repre sentatives from the Boise Commer cial club. This league has received the endorsement of the leading busi ness men of the city and will un doubtedly be a go. Messrs. Cody and Sweet of Boise have returned from Yakima report that the fans there believe they can make more money In independent baseball and there fore refuse to join. The situation In Xorth Yakima Is that certain men have full control of baseball there and Instead of boosting the town with it by getting into a league, they would rather pad their own purses by any kind of baseball that they can draw the fans out to. Yakima has now been dropped and all believe it will be to the best advantage of the league for other towns more lively and enthusiastic are already clamor ing for entrance. It 'is thought that Ontario's claim will prevail and that enterprising little town Just this side of Boise will be Included. This will make the Jump shorter and the league more compact. It is the desire of the committee appointed Thursday night to hold another meeting of all baseball men In the club rooms tonight for the pur pose of formulating definite plans for organization and determining finally what Walla Walla wants. A meet ing of delegates will be held in Pen dleton Wednesday evening and If Walla Walla decides definitely' to enter the league tonight. J. T. Craw ford will represent this city at that meeting. In the neighboring state of Nebraska where the Clark candidacy was .an nounced as a progressive movement, the progressive democrats requested the speaker's name to be withdrawn from the primary because the effect of his continued candidacy might be to throw the state to the reactionary Governor Harmon. - In Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi and other southern states, Chairman Underwool alone opposes Governor Wilson the erstwhile Har mon and Clark supporters going over to Underwood. In other words, where the sentiment of the democrats Is supposed to be sharply divided between progressives and conservatives, the safe arul sane Harmon Is sent to the front. Where It is a fight among progressives, the speaker is put forward. Where noth ing but appeal to something outside the realm of politics will suffice to weaken Wilson, then Chairman Un derwood is put up as a candidate in southern states as a southern mnn, the appeal being to sectional pride. ' Instead of this alliance threatening the defeat of Governor Wilson1, as might be surmised at first thought. It actually forecasts, his victory by show ing up the essential weakness of the opposition which Is unable to engage In a national battle In all of the states and sections of the country, but Is forced to wage a bushwacking cam paign, picking off one state here for this reason, another there for another reason, and basing all hope upon the slight prospect of controlling not the convention, but a bare one-third of the delegates, so as to defeat the choice of the majority by invoking the two-hlrds rule. If you cough all night you get no rest, nor does anyone else In the house. Keep within reach a bottle of BALLAKD'S HOREIIOUND SY RUP.
