The golfer will be nervous on the green; The city man will stumble through the stubbies with his gun Where no solitary quail wa3 ever seen. The plaintive hurdy-gurdy and "da monk" have come again To lure the shouting children down the street; And presently the people who are fleshy will- complain That the worst of all our ills is summer heat. Chicago Record-Herald. blue sky" regulations in Oregon should meet with good approval In Vmatilla county. For some rea-son probably because s.. many people In this county have money Old. Umatilla seems to have ben particularly blessed with sales men for questionable enterprises. As yet no one has actually attempted to NU lots in the heavenly blue but there have been numerous gentlemen willing to sell various and assortej ptoperty supposed to have existence below the surface of the earth or in the air. A bad feature about their operations is that they do not always confine their work to men who have money to spare. Often they get money from wage earners hi need all their coin in the support of their families. There are laws against gambllnfi. There should also be laws against get rich quick schemes wherein the vic tims have no possible show of winning. THE REALM FEMININE Some New Recoils far raprr ' Hug Cookery. otatoes With Parsley. New potatoe are much nicer If cooked this way than are old potatoes but either may be used. Old potatoes of course should be pee'.ed. Wash and scrape the potatoes, which should be as nearly of a size as possible. Melt a little butter, brush the In side of each bag with some of It. Dip each potato in me'.ted butter, then dust it with chopped parsley. Wrap each potato in its paper, then put them in a buttered baking-tin and cook in a moderate oven until they are tender; the time required will probably bo from three-quarters of an hour to an hour. Serve the potatoes In a hot vegeta ble dish. Before being put into the bugs the potatoes should be cut around just through the rind. IT IS NOT A CITY SHOW. IS I I lieports from the Los Angeles wild v. est show seem to bear out the pre dictions made some time ago to the n'fect it would not be a tremendous success. By the very nature of things it is Impossible to reproduce the Round-up in a targe city. It is not a city shw. The Round-up makes i.n attractive entertainment becau.-o the local color is right, because the lior.-es and performers come in di-r-et from the range and because tlv sltow is a community affair not a private money making enterprise. In the view of this paper parties desiring to produce a frontier show in the southwest should have gone to El Paso, fan Antonio, Tucson or some other small southwest city lo cated in the heart of a cattle country. Neither bronchoes or broncho riders can perform with naturalness when surrounded by street cars. NOT KXTIKKLY XKW. THE BItAXCII HOSPITAL. With appropriate ceremony today the corner stone of the Eastern Ore gon State Hospital was laid and the program marks an important step in the construction of an institution that Is being established under very for tunate circumstances. . To begin with the branch hospital is well located. It is located in a sec tion noted for its moderate tempera ture and clear skies. Vmatilla coun ty is the Land of Sunshine and sun shine means good cheer. There Is no other city in the west that has as much sunshine when sunshine is wanted as has Pendleton. There are no great extremes of heat or cold and no serious storm ever arises to endanger the lives or property of the people. We have the nearest that is to be had in" the way of a model cli mate. The Eastern Oregon hospital will also be well located geographically. It is located adjoining the hub city of eastern Oregon. Pendleton is closer to the bulk of the eastern Ore gon territory than is any other town of any size in eastern Oregon. This means convenience and economy f t the state and fur parties who cvr.i. to the institution to see patients. There are 22 passenger trains arriv ing or departing from this city each day more trains than enter or de part from any city in the state aside from Portland. It is a good feature. Then the branch hospital is be ing well built. It will not be a patch work affair as are so many Institu tions of it character. It was design ed by men who know something about the needs of such an institution and who have striven earnestly to estab lish a model hospital In every re ject. They are doing this and yet U ing it at the lowest possible expense fi risistent with good work. The state of Oregon will get value recrivid out of the money spent on the Institution of which the corner stone was placed this afternoon. A magazine writer has called at tention .to the fact the recall of judges is not such a new thing as people : suppose. In realty the recall has been i i voperation for a long time, so he argues. The power has rested with Pitieal machines and the men who r.;anipulate them. Such men have often in the past used the hook to re move a judge who had shown himself too independent or too liberal in his views on questions wherein the rights of special interests were at stake. There is something, to the sugge.3 t'on. Judges have long felt fear of political managers because they have had the dealing out of nominations. Why not offset that by giving them some reason for fearing the displeas ure of the people if they go too far astray. PltOTECTIO.V XKEDED. Efforts being made by Governor West, Secretary Olcott and Portland organizations towards establishing Quality in Cooking FaU - In cooking fats Cottolene ii superior in quality to all othert. Its source if clean and wholesome, it is made in cleanly urroundings, and is packed in airtight pails of special design that keep the contents indefinitely sweet and fresh free from dust and odors. Cottolene is richer and will go one-third farther han lard or other cooking fats made to resemble Cottolene. in everything else quality usually regulate! the price. If your grocer should ask you a trifle more for Cot' tolene, it is because it is worth more. Besides, Cottolene is guaranteed "tatia actory or your money back." The Carnegie Foundation men find much to criticise in connection with the universites and colleges of the land. But If they can find any more fault than 'there is fault with the Carnegie Foundation they will have to go far. The Carnegie Foundation, by its very existence, is a piece of unwarranted Impertinence. The states and the nation maintain the cclleges and universities of the land. It Is not necessary for Andy to dabble i.i their management. It is evident that neither Judge El lis or Jerry Rusk are drawing enor mous crowds single handed. They should hold a joint debate to stir up excitement. The new Mexican revolution is proving almost as interesting as the Roosevelt-Taft scrap. The baseball bug is buzzing pret ty loudly. The corner stone was slow in com ing but sure. Yes, there is need of that hard sur face driveway. Regular Pendleton weather. GIP.I, HAS LONGEST NAME. The Identity of the possessor of probably the longest nanje in Chicago came to light in Judge William E. Dever'a court today. She Is a girl 15 years old and tier name is Harbertunnlnnlbertunnla Pil low, she was a witness. What is your name?" asked Judge Iever,' when the girl stepped before the bench. "Harbertnunnlnnibertunnla Pillow, sir." said the girl. "What's- that?" queried the court. "Spell that." "That's a pretty long name, re sponded the court. "When your parents or friends ad dress you, do they call you by your first name?" "Sometimes they do," she answer ed, "but for short they call me Har bertunnl." New York World. GIVE HER A TRIAL. Wash the tomatoes, take off the stems and wrap each tomato in its paper bag. Lay them in a grease.l baking tin. and bake In a moderate oven from ten to twenty minutes, or until they are tender without being broken. Serve in a hot vegetable dish. Season the slices with sa'.t i'lid pepper, wrap them separately and securely in oiled paper, then broil or eriil them. Serve the slices with brown sauce. Why should not such walls be decorated, relieved of their gloom by appropri ate paintings Of course, the answer is expense. In England, however, a committee of artists, art patrons, critics and phi lanthropists has been formed for the purpose of promoting mural paint ing in schools, ehuches, hospitals and other institutions. Young artists and students are to be invited to submit designs and to decorate such wall space as may be offered, for very small pay or without any pay at all, in or der to get useful experience. The idea Is to submit all designs to intel ligent criticism and accept only truly artistic work Is expected. Is not this plan excellent from every point of view? Would it not promote art as well as public appreciation of mural painting? Why should not American artists and lovers of beauty start a similar movement in this country? The Hull House Theater offers a good example of appropriate mural decoration, and thousand have admired the paint intr as well as the subjects. Wry not follow this example? Elliston, Va. "I feel it my duty to express my thanks for what Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegeta ble Compound has done for me. I was a sufferer from fe male troubles and had been confined in bed over one third of my time for t&n months. I could not do my housework and had fainting Bpells so that myhus band could not leave me alone for five minutes at a time. "Now I have been restored to health and it has come from taking Lydia E, Pinkham 's Vegetable Compound. When ever I see a suffering woman I want to tell her what this medicine has done for me and I will always speak a good word for it" Mrs. Robert Blank- E.N3UIP, Elliston, Va., Montgomery Co. "Yas Helpless Now Well. Trenton, Mo. "About two years a'pro I had female trouble and inflammation so bad that I was literally helpless and had to be tended like a baby. I could not move my body .or lift my foot for such severe pains that I had to scream. I was very nervous and had a weakness. "Lydia E. Pinkham'3 Vegetable Com pound has helped me to such an extent that I think there is no medicine'like it for female troubles. I am up and able to do my work again and I give you full permission to publish my letter for the sake of other suffering women." Mrs. W.T.PURNELL,320-10th St, Trenton, Mo. A WOMAN'S REASOX. "Wou'.d you marry a man who was younger than yourself?" "I might. A good deal would de pend on a certain circumstance." "What circumstance is that?" "I should want him to agree to let his whiskers grow and use some kind of hair restorer regularly so that he might become bald as soon as pos sible."
