Premium Cat tle Situation still Weak ami Re ceipt Heavy Sheep Very Firm Wheat (loses I,ower. (From Thursday's Journal.) Stretching the price of hogs 20c per hundred pounds, the first hogs offer ed by the Baldwin Sheep company 6n the Deschutes road received contHd crablo attention in the North Port land yards toduy. The shipment In cluded 104 head, that averaged 148 pounds and sold at $6.93. This com pares with the previous high mark at $6.75. The springing of the price of hogs at Xorth Portland today was a not able occasion, because buyers have re peatedly stated that $6.75 was the ex treme limit that they could or would pay for hogs at this time. To force the market 20c above this means that some thing out of the ordinury In quality was offered. While the high price paid for the lot was probably Influenced to some extent by the desire of the buyers to force a heavy increase In the raising1 of hogs in the Deschutes country, the quality was said to deserve something better than has recently been avail able In the local yards. The offerings consisted entirely of fancy blockers. this class of stuff being in best de mand locally at all times. Light Io;s Command Premiums. While it Is the rule for heavy hogs to sol at the best prices at middle west centers, if the quality Is right, different conditions rule here. Along the Pacific coast the demand for pork products is for a lighter grade than that shown elsewhere. This, there fore, forces that grade of hogs to the highest point in the yards. In the middle west centers, where they have a very good demand the call Is gen erally best for heavy offerings. That Is the reason why light stuff Is not regarded with so much favor there as here. ' North Portland swine prices: Fancy mixed 6-95 Good heavy . . 6.75 Medium light 6.95 Rough and heavy 6.00 Contract Cattle Come Forward. There was quite a big bunch of con tract cattle In the yards today. Some of It was sold a short time ago to Carsten of Tacoma for arrival here. The market Is really sick and stock is hard to move at any price Every one continues overloaded and with no desire to take hold unless prices are wildly shaded. The weakness of the trade is Indi cated by. the fact that the big bunch of California stuff which arrived the first of the week has Just been sold. Ten loads of toppy steers sold nt $6 35 compared with $6.60 which this same class of stuff would have brought last week. Three loads of slightly Inferior quality sold at $6.15. Out of Sorts?
