PENDLETON - - OREGON Portland, Ore., Feb. 20 Charles W. Fulton win not be a candidate for the republican nomination for United States senator. In a statement he declares he is not convinced that he is the most available candidate to make the race against Senator Bourne and declines to run. John M. Gearin will not be a candi date for the democratic nomination. After several days of conference with democratic leaders, who endeavored to persuade him to take up the fight, he declared his mind is finally made up to remain out of the contest. Ben Selling stated that he will give a final answer as to his Intentions to day. It is generally believed that with Fulton definitely out of It. Mr. Stlling will declare himself a candi date and will start out for the scalp of Bourne.' On the democratic side, interest centers in efforts now being made to place Dr. Harry Lane in the field. So far as Portland is concerned, the talk of candidates has oscilated between Gearin and Lane. Now that Gearin has declined, local democrats are de claring it is "up to Lane." Lineup of Candidates. Apparently , the republican candi dates to enter the primary will be Ben Selling, Stephen A. Lowell of Pendleton, Senator Bourne and J. W. Morton of Salem, providing the latter files his nominating petition. The democrats already announced are Walter M, Pierce of Hot Lake, Milton A. Miller of Lebanon and O. P. Coshaw of Roseburg. If the name of Dr. Harry Lane is added, as his friends now believe It will be. it is believed that at least one of these candidates will withdraw. In explanation of Tils attitude. ex Senator Fulton issued a lengthy state ment, in which he sets forth his views on the needs of the state in national legislation and attacks Senator Bourne. Declaring it important that Bourne be retired, he says "I am not disposed to take any step that will militate against that necessary and all-desired result," Mr. Fulton makes an Interesting statement concerning his opinions up on the "Oregon system." asserting he has never opposed it, and is In accord with It In the main. He says it is now adopted and settled as the law of the state. Admitting he did not con strue Statement No. 1 to mean thaj a republican legislator was required to vote for a democratic, for United States senator, he adds: "The people have construed the law otherwise, and I bow to that de cision and construction." A violent antipathy to Colonel Theodore Ronsevelt, amount ing to a mania, and resulting in a sort of "business melancholia," was given as the reason for the suicide of William E. Vermilya, 50, president of the Itufus Waterhouse company, manufacturers of neckwear, by drink ing carbolic acid in his home, in Mount Vernon. According to an officer of the com pany, who was seen, Mr. Vermllya's anti-Hoosevelt mania dates back to the panic of 1907. It appears that Mr. Vermilya weathered th panic only after a hard struggle. He plac ed the blame for business conditions on President Koosevelt. Early in the Taft administration Mr. Vermilya recovered somewhat from his pessimistic gloom. Hut when the Taft Administration began its on slaughts against trusts all of his fear.--were reawakened. "During the past few weeks, since the ' newspapers have repeatedly an nounced that Koosevelt might become it candidate for the nomination, Mr. Vermilya's depression has been piti able." said the Informant. Sensible Women Know Foundation of Health As linnllh talks to women become more iceneriil. both In the nowsi'iipcrs nml on t lie pint form, the mass of women are begin ning to realize whnt the more enltivnted hnve alwsys known, that good health can not be found In a powder box. The ex ternals of health may be obtained In that way, but the basis of health lies deeper, and yet Is just as easily obtained . The most Important tiling that a wo man can do for herself, and about which she Is often most neglectful, Is to watl the condition of her stomach and bowels. The weary even, the bad breath, the fre quent headaches, the pimples, the general air of lassitude Is nine times out nf ten tbe result of constipation or Indigestion, or both. Many simple remedies can be ob tained, but the best in the estimation cf most women Is Dr.. Caldwell's Syrup Pep sin. It is mild, pleasant to the taste and exactly suited to her needs. It Is far superior to salts, eathnrtlc pllln, waters, etc., which ore entirely too violent. Women should Ree lo It that they have at least one movement f'f the bowels each day, and when showing any tendency to constipation should take Dr. (,'nldwell's Syrup 1'cpsln In the small doso prescribed. A brief use nf It will ho train the stomach and bowel uitiKclcs that all dirmi of medi cine ran be dispensed with. These opin ions are voiced by thousands of women, after personal experience, among them Aim M. Lilly. Iiedwlne, Calif., and Mary A. lieelie, St. Thomas, Nevada. Anyone wishing to make a trial of this remedy beforo buying It In the regular way of a druggist nt fifty cents or one dollar a bottle (family slxe) can have a sample bottle sent to the home free of charge by simply addressing Dr. W.
