Contractor T IS STILL FAVORABLE HOGS AND MUTTON EACH SHOW MARKED ADVANCE Cattle Market RtnialiiH Firm WIUi Rw-ciirtM Ffcli More Favorable for t'owfl and IMAi Wlioat 0(Hnis IIIkIht Hut React. (From Wednesday's Journal.) Situation at North Portland is very favorable for all clas-es of livestock and in two lines advanced prices were the rule today. Wh le there was a rather favorable showing of hogs in the yards this morning, buyers took hold of stock much more readily and this forced on advance of a d'me In the price. Tops sold in a number of Instances at 16 85 during the day; this being com pared with the best previous prce at J6.75. Hog offerings for tne day for 41 1 head compared with none last Wed nesday. T Today's advance in the price of swine at North Portland was made in the face of a general decline at east ern and middle west centers. This fully confirms the reports printed in the Journal recently to the fact that hog values here have been out of line with those ruling at centers wherein the Pacific northwest pack ers purchased a large per cent of their requirements. Furnished on j D. A. MAY and Builder of all kinds of Concrete Work. 1 On the basis of what It is cos'.lng Pac'fic northwest packers to bring forward supplies of Missouri river hogs, local swine should have been selling at $7.25 recently, as the qual ity of the home offerings was better than the out-ide stock. At South Omaha today there was a cut of 6 to 10c in the price of hogs This put tops to J6.10. It costs $1.10 to bring hogs from the Missouri river to the Pacific northwest, therefore the land ing cost of Nebraska swine here 1 $7.20. Cattle Market Is Firm. While prices were practically the same as yesterday In the cattle di vision of the North Portland market today, the tone Is very good. A to tal of 250 head was received, com pared with but 19 head last Wednes day. Atl over the country there has been a very good tone in the cattle trade recently? owing to the more favorable demand for meats. The Improvement has been more especially noticeable at eastern centers In the cheaper qualities than in the best stuff, but locally most of the improvement has been in selected goods The market at present is more fa vorable for cows and heifers than for steers, although by no means Is the latter line showing the slightest neg lect. Speyed heifers sold this morn Ing at $5.50, fully confirming the ad vance of yesterday. Few Calves Are Offered. Market for calves Is quiet but firm at unchanged prices.
