News of out rages at the hnnds of outlaw bands came to the government today when di-patches told of assaults upon a t number of girls in the state of Mexi co. A band of perhaps 100 men raid ed two haciendas near Chulco, within 23 miles of this city, and stole every thing they could move. Ore., Pec. 15. On re quest of the Oregon railroad com mission, the chief inspector of the in terstate commerce commission has been ordered to make an inspection of the exploded freight locomotive which yesterday caused the death of VP. D. McKinley, a former Idaho legis lator and stockman. An inquest is being hfrld this afternoon. It is said ?he striking shopmen charging that strikebreakers' incompetency caused the wreck is behind the request. W. 35. McKinley, the stockman who was killed Wednesday night in the Glover explosion, was a man very 3rom:nent in the political life of Ida according to messages received ' here from La Grande where his body is being held pending the holding of a coroner's inquest. Although it was at fir-t given out that his home was in Nebraska, it was later discovered 'that be came from Hansen, Idaho. His son arrived in La Grande this imom'r.g and will tke the body of his father back to Hansen this evening. The deceased was a prominent stock man and was at one time a state sen ator in the Idaho legislature and lat- r represented Idaho at the Alaska Yukon exposition held in Seattle. His son, who came to take the body Tack. is likewise prominent in Idaho pollt'cs, having recently been speaker of the houpe in the legislature. Conductor May Live. Reports this morning from La Grande were to the effect that Con ductor B. E. Hancock, -who was se riously injured in the wreck of the caboose, had a fighting chance to live. His principal injury consisted of the perforation of his lungs by a broken rib and it is feared complications will result. His shoulder was also broken, his face and arms scalded and his scalp badly laeterated. Brakeman Perrine, who was riding n the cupola of the caboose at the time of the explosion, will recover from his injuries, it is announced. His face and arms were scalded and his back hurt. H'b home is also in La Grande. Fireman Sparks of La Grande, who was on the helper engine which ex ploded, escaped with a dislocated an kle, while Engineer Chandler of the same engine, did not receive even a scratch and assisted in the work of rescue and in clearing away the debris. It was great ly appreciated by the people that vis ited his show house, not only to see the excellent films but to enjoy a truly artistical, although mechanical orchestra. Vera Clark, five years old. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George CHik of Owensville, is pos sibly the youngest telephone exchunge operator in tho I'n'ted States-. Her parents have charge of the telephone exchange here and little Vera is learning the wires. The switchboard she handles has connection with e'ghty-five lines, and there are more than 300 patrona in communication with the board. It turns out that the ns-embllng of about twenty young women from various sections of th's city and surrounding towns at a prom inent street corner was the result of a cruel practical joke perpetrated by some "unknown hoaxer. . The fellow, whoever he was, inserted an attrac tive ad in a newspaper, saying he was looking for a wife, and he got about 100 replies. It seems he wrote to all of the wo- ! men asking them to meet him at a certain place at a given hour. Each, of course, thought she was the only one, and when so many of them got together the effect was ridiculous. 1 Some of the disappointed women were no longer young. Murphy, George Brad ley and Ben Cresswell. had reached a point about two miles on their way home from attending a meeting of the Pilot Rock lodge last night, their car belonging to the grand warden, broke down, and in consequence the four Odd Fellows did not reach home until 3 a. m. How ever, they report a splendid time at I the Pilot Rock meeting. HEARS FlNXY STORIES; LAIGILS SELF TO DEATH New York. Mrs. Annie Sperber. of New York, is dead, having literally laughed herself to death at some new Jokes told her by a ne'ghbor, Mrs. Catherine Phillips. After Mrs. Phll- I lips had told an unusually funny , story, which had sent Mrs. Sperber into a violent laughing fit, she fol j lowed It quickly with another which j Mrs. Sperber had not heard. The j merr'mtnt caused by the comb'ned humor of the two stories resulted in such convulsions that Mrs. Sperber's laughter grow weaker and weaker and as It ended in a last faint chuckle the woman was found to be dead.
