Entertainment of the most approv ed style for stag events was furnish ed by the Commercial club quartet, consisting of Jack Keefe, first tenor and accompanist. Jefferson Lord, sec ond tenor, James P. Neal, first bass, ind Charles Meighan. second base. These young men, all posses?ed of splendid voices, have developed a juartet of exceptional merit, the best, according to many critics, that has ever stfng in the city. Although they have been together but a few times they have worked up . large repertoire of song and med leys and every one of their numbers is characterized with life and vigor. They responded to encore after en ccre and after they had exhausted their list, they sang anything and everything that was placed before fhem. Besides their quartet selections, each one of the four songsters ren dered a few solos, ranging from clas sics down to the raggest of ragtimes and the inimitable Keefe supplied a few of his newest "pianology" hits. Cigars and pipes burned until the room was a hazy blue and social con versation followed the program. The meeting adjourned about 10 o'clock and the members wended their way homeward with business cares for gotten and grouches lifted from, their souls. The quartet left on the early morn ing train this morning for Milton, where it will he a big feature in the program of the MUton-Freewater Fruitgrowers convention. Hnbo Has Appendicitis. A most unusual operation was per formed at St. Anthony's hospitul sev eral days ago when the appendix of the two-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Carl S. McNaught of Hermlston was removed. The little patient has recovered from the effects of the sur gical treatment and is improving rapidly. , Ueoalls Old Times. It has not been so many years ago that these big freighters loaded with provisions were daily sights on the streets of Pendleton. women have served' as Jurors in dif ferent parts of California since the adoption of the suffrage amendment to the state constitution. Were Illegal. Put since In every 'case verdicts of not guilty were returned by the wo men Juries, no action Is expecte'd to be taken. "In my opinion women are not qualified to art as jurors In this or any other stato, unless the constitu tion of the state is specifically amend ed bo to provide," says Cryer. "The recently adopted amendment elves women of this state the right to vote, but not to serve a Jurors. The constitution of this state and the national constitution provides that persons charged with crime may de mand a trial by n common law Jury, designated as twelve men." MILLIONAIRE WRESTLES BEARS Long Beach. Unlike other mll l'onaires. Charles I. D. Looff does not lose his excess energy by seeking the links and fanning an Innocent little ball. Nor does he wrestle with the strenuous game of pinochle until physically exhausted. None of the vain playthings which attract Standard Oil magnates and other philanthropists, appeal to the manufacturer who soon Is to remove his carousal plant to this city. When Looff feels the cloying atmosphere of great mental strain he merely goes out In his back yard opens the doors of his menagerie and takes a fall out of his bears. The manufacturer already has put it on the three bears of his collection and Is now looking for another bruin, one that really Is in his class. He Is willing to take anything except a grizzly which has not been fed lately. Although Mr. Looff finds great rec reation in training hi cinnamon and black bears, few of his friends find time to join him in the light amusement. 1 800 Acres of Land Sold. His Illustrated o)o at the rlojl'e was also very fine. Tonight he will sing, ;'If We Only Had the Time." Much curiosity was menifest over the subject of Mr. Holmes, but it 1 safe to say that no one was disap pointed with the sermon. It was a terrific arraignment of sin. The Il lustrations used were to the point and effectively handled and although the evangelist spoke longer than usual, the grea audience seemed held In tently to the one thought 'of the power of Jin. And the prom'se of de liverence through Christ. The Inter est .In the meeting has reached the stage where there are many ptfople talking of the work, and where peo ple are confessing Christ even out side of the services. A very interesting talk was made before the sermon by the evangelist on the Holy Spirit. He announced that he would follow th's line for sev eral evenings, preaching on the holy spirit In regeneration on Friday night. He answered many bible ques tions at the close of the sermon and said he was here to help all honest inquirers after truth, but had no time for foolishness, and would not pay any attention to any questions that savored of criticism of other reli gious organizations, unless it -should be where gross error Is manifest, as in the ca.-e of so-called divine heal ing, etc. He will pay h's respects to things of this character tonight In hit ser mon on "Simon Outdone."
