A few month's later, Harry Lans dale. n surveyor, came across Garcia's cabin and met Bess and by means of a locket containing her mother's na ture, he knew who she was. With the assistance of a party of cowboys, he rescued her, at the same time gain ing himself a beautiful bride. A most absorbing story, splendidly act ed. 2. "Satan's Rival." Pathe. ' Satan looking for mischief. Bees two happy lovers, one a knight, the other a princess, and takes a fancy to marry the beautiful princess himself. The knight Is warned by a fairy to frus trate Satan by his own strength. He has a very hard time till the good fairy and the holy hermit come to his aid. Then Satan is overcome and the princess and knight are happily married. The costumes are gorgeous. It is a very pleasing picture. 3. "Where There's a Will, There's a Way," Selig Comedy. Two judges ore close friends, they nave but one child each, an attractive daughter. Two young men pay court to them and are surprised In their lovemaklng by the judges, who order them from their homes. The boys swear to get oven. Of course they win. much to the chr.grln of the two crusty old jur ists. 4. "The Great Nitrate of Soda In dustry of Chile," Selig. An excellent educational, illustrating the great ni trate of soda f'elds of Chile, showing in detail the modes of securing and preparing for market this valuable chemical, of which south America supplies the bulk of the world's out put. 5. "The Professor and the New Hat" Edison A charming little story of an absent mlndea professor, his daughter and her young man. A re freshing light comedy. 6. "The Question Mark," Edison. With a view of or ganizing a movement to put down lawlessness In the Kentucky moun tain region, scenes of many notorious feuds, a campaign has been begun to assemble the leading men of the dist rict here on October 9. The Idea of the advocates of the or. ganlzation Is that the trouble with the Kentucky mountaineers is "unpun ished lawlessness." With an adequate system of polic ing. It Is argued, order would be as sured and the rich country, unde veloped partly because of Its reputed lawlessness be made availablo for full and free occupation. THE PASTIME. AT THE OREGON THEATRE . The Portland Journal has the fol lowing to say about "The Sunny S de of Broadway." which appears at the Oregon Theater Saturday night. Bathed in a bright glow of fun and reflecting all of its sunshine on the audience, "The Sunny Side of Broad way" opened up the fall season at the new Baker theater last night before a house that was filled almost to over flowing. The crowd attested the po pularity of Manager Baker's play house, as the weather was somewhat chilly. "A nifty song show" is what the press agent terms the offering of last .1 . night at 'he Baker. present will dispute the allegation. The pot-puorrU hodge podge, or what ever else you choose to call it, certain Iv pleased the audience immensely. There were encores by the dozen. Max Bloom, who Is headlined on the b.ll, appeared in the part of a He brew peddler of clothes and live stock. But the audience was chiefly Interested in the line of conversation "peddled by the eccentric character mimic. . His song parodies were all screams of mirth that brought him hack before the curta:n eZght times. J. E. Coughlin and Jack Leslie, a cair of live Irish comedians, were nearly as diverting as the star. John-'years, nv Gilmore and Alice Sher sang a I One number of pleasing songs. boasts of a chorus of more than ordi nary comeliness and size. It Is clean and funny, and the worst that may be said of the show is mat It Is per haps a trifle frothy.
