(From Monday's Journal.) .Steadiness Is showing in the mutton division of the North Portland yards as a result of the increased consump tion in the local territory, owing to the rather low prices low (imitation asked generally for dressed sheep and lambs, this class of foods hits been given preference recently by retailer and therefore the demand for mutton products is fully four times as great as a year ago. Fancy lambs 'sold at $4.75 In the torkyiu ls this morning for stock that averaged around 78 pounds. This is within 5 cents of the extreme high figure recently received for some Mount Adams offerings and therefore reflects an advance of probably a dime above previous quotations. slKvp Itim Is ;mk1. Shippers in with sheep and lambs since Saturday were: C. P. Ketchum, The Dalles, Or., two loads, and R. N. Stanfield, Baker, Dr., four loads. At Chicago today there was a steady tone in the sheep und lamb trade, with no change in prices. South Omaha sheep and lamb trade was under pressure today owing to the heavv run of 41.000 head over Sunday. Steadiness was shown In the cattle trade at North Portland. While there was a rather liberal run over Sunday, total offerings being 548 head, 10 loads of these did not enter the trade at all. being a direct shipment to the Car.ston Packing company of Tacoma from liaker, Or. Good cattle were Included among today's offerings at North Portland, therefore the average price was some what hotter than recently. Cattle trade in general is of the -pinion that there will be a much better tone in the North Portland market before long, or as soon as the rather liberal offerings begin to subside. With competing markets fully 2c a pound better than the Port land trade I" willing to pay. It is out of the question for Pacific northwest certain points in Idaho or Montana until there is n change in the situa tion either here or elsewhere. Th? difference In the price is too great to allow cattle shipments to come to Portland from competing centers. At Chicago today there as a steady tone In the cattle trade, with no change in prices. South Omaha cattle prices were not very firm today, trade being slow and lull. H-uvever, top steers are still moled there up to $7.R0, while best cows and heifers bring to $5.75. There was small run of local hogs In the yards today and trade held very well at previous quotations. The run included 70 head, all but 8 head com ing from Boise. The steadiness of the hog trade else where is expected to help maintain good quotations at North Portland in the immediate future. Tops sold at South Omaha this morning at $7.40, which means that it cost $8.50 to land these supplies here. The differential between the landed cost of Missouri river hogs and the pric paid at North Portland Is now so small that flucta tions at South Omaha are likely to quickly affect the trade here. LEGAL BIGAMY IN KANSAS. Fiftieth Annual Pittsburg, Kan "I love him and I cannot stay away from him, even if Louisa is also his wife," declared Mrs. Anna Catherine Sharp, first wife of Peter C. Sharp of this city, who returned here from New Orleans where she went following a quarrel with Sharp's second and younger wife Louisa. The first Mrs. Sharp today is a guest again at the Sharp home. 'she can stay as long as she wants to." sa'd Mrs. Louisa Sharp last night "but I am to be the boss." Sharp and his first wife, Ann Catherine, were parted in the great Chicago fire: Nine years ago he came to Pittsburg and married his second wife, Louisa. Ann Catherine located Sharp through the United States pen sion bureau. She came here, but found him mairied. As she had been legally dead many years, she had no standing in court. Sharp, however, took her into his home and for several weeks the two women lived in the house, the first wife' as a guest. Quar rels caused Ann Catherine to go to New Orleans to live with a son inoiv than' a month ago. A Tour Hundred Dollar Upton Piano Absolutely Given Away! A few years ago if a merchant was to do such a thing he would be considered a fit subject for an asylum, but conditions have changed, yet in the face of the enor mous sum spent in advertising the fact of I he Pendleton Drug Co. giv ing away a $400.00 piano is a stu pendous undertaking and it clearly demonstrates their desire to be "always up to and a little ahead" of the spirit of the times.
