CAXCEIl IS A GF.HM DISEASE, SAYS PHYSICIAN SPOKANE LADIES WOULD GO TO LEG ISLAT URE Washington. That cancer Is a germ disease and not due to other causes Is the claim of Dr. Frank F. .Smith, chief Pathologist of the Bu reau of Plant Industry of the depart ment of agriculture. For seven years Dr. Smith has held his theory and now he says he has proved that plant cancers or tumors are due to germs, human cancers are due to the same cause. "Physicians," said Dr. Smith to day, "claim that cancer is not a germ disease simply because they have nev er been able to find the germ, but 1 have proved conclusively that plant tumors which are nothing more than cancers in the vegetable world are due to a parasite, despite the fact that I have never seen or found the organlBm. But by thousands of ex periments and years of patient work I have found that it is so, and every one who has studied the vegetable and animal world knows whata sim ilarity there is between the plant tu mor and the human cancer. "Therefore, having proven the one to bo due to a germ I cannot see that there is the shadow of a doubt but tnat the other la also." Spokane, Wash. Spokane's dele gation of 10 representatives and five senators In the state legislature of llo will include two women. If the ilang outlined today by officers of the Women's Xon-Partisan Political league and the Political Equality league of Washington are successful. The candidates will probably be Mrs. A. I. Fassett, president of the first named organization, and Mrs. May Ark wright Hutton, wife of a million aire mining operator, who gave ma terial assistance In securing the bal lot for the women of Washington at the last state election. Mrs. Fassett announced that members of the or ganization have .studied the laws of the state and will make their cam paign or issue affecting women's status and Juvenile legislation. Tlie silver pheasant has been the bully of that part of the Inclos ure south of the chicken wire. He Is i'bout twice the size of the red and yellow bird known as the golden phea sant, and his spurs are like steel gafts. But something stimulated the red fowl's courage and he bored in with lils lnill-llke neck until the sil ver bird's head was as red as his and there was a new bully In the poultry yard. "The golden cock's strength Is most, ly In his neck and head," the keep er said. "But the feud isn't over yet. It's discouraging to tho big fellow to have his silver coat all mussed up ami face scarred. That's why he droops around so now. But the fight in him will come back with his good looks. l-'KEH HIDE FOH OLD NAG. of Farmer Susjiects the Aged Steed Having "Worked" Him. Ambcrg. Wis.
