MAYOR TELLS OF DEAL Oil UGHTS Bearing upon the subject of rebates due the city for irregular street lights during the past few months, Mayor E. J. Murphy made the following statement. "We have not asked the electric company for rebates during the pact few months because not long ago we induced the company to install two additional arc lights, one on East Court street and one on Lincoln street, without increasing the city's monthly bill. We considered this in the nature of a rebate but I think no one connected with the council knew of this matter aside rcm Councilman Montgomery and myself." RiS Congress for Philadelphia. Philadelphia. Plans are under way for the entertainment of the dele gates, numbering thousands, who will come to Philadelphia a year hence for the International Navigation congress. All of the civilized nations of the globe will be represented in the meet ing, which will be the first f its kind ever held in the New World. The United .States government has con tributed $50,000 toward the entertain ment of the distinguished visitors on inspection trips to the Panama canal, the great Irrigation projects of the west and other places of interest. Creswell, of San Diego, is now here accompanied by his wife and they are visiting as the guests o the captain's cousin, J. A. Creswell. Captain Creswell is a na tive of Portland but is now in the steamboat business at San Diego, owning a line of seven steamers and ferryboats. On their present trip they traveled by auto to. Portland and they have a specially made auto In which they sleep. Captain Creswell has a commission as special com missioner for the big exposition to be held at San Diego in 1915 and he Is using his spare time boosting that exposition. From here Captain and Mrs. Creswell will go to Walla WTalla thence to Spokane and Seattle and then back to California by auto. FOREST FIRES RAGING. Tallman, the local drugg'st, has invested in land In the west end of the county, having paid $100 an acre for a ten acre tract northeast of Stanfield! The land was purchased from the Inland Irrigation company and the deed was- recorded this morning. 1 A Long Distance Attachment. j A representative of the Clear Phone company of Stamford, Conn., is in the city today selling long dis tance attachments to telephones. He succeeded in placing several in the . court house. Area Burnoxl Over During Past Few Dnys. Bend, Ore. Forest Fires 'are re ported within a radius of 30 or 40 i miles of Bend during the past week. i and thousands of acres have been swept by fire, both in the National forest and private holdings. The gov ernment timber seems to have suf fered the most, especially a few miles southeast of Pine Mountain. In the Pine Mountain section over 1000 acres have been burned over. Assistant Forest Supervisor H. E. Deuetch rnd Supervisor Ral Harvey i of Bend, went out to the burning ! district south of Bend and succeeded In extinguishing the fires there. There are fires reported In the vi cinity of La Pine and Spring river. It is thought these were set by camp ers, but the most of the fires, it Is believed, were set by the lightning.
