Into the hills of Sherman and on' to Wasco, A. C. Power, representative for the Pen dleton Hound-Up. reached Portland last evening, having- shipped his tough little saddle horse from The Dalles, says the Portland Journal. He made the tr'p from Pendleton in less than a week. "It's going to be some Round-up this year," said Mr. Power. "Folks say we have the finest grandstand in the west and the new park is a hum dinger. The grandstand nnd bleach ers will seat 15 00(1 people, and if necessary we can soon build more seats. We have a fine ipiarter mile race track and a dandy half mile pleasure drive. And to keep it In wood condlt'on. we have organized a driving club that Is working over time." 'Doc" Great Horse. Mr. Power made the ride from Pendleton on "Doe." winner of the li:,ii- milo raee :t r tho Pound-no last JlMl, Wiliuei IL nil" ll"t 1IIHV.-L f'"J express race and third in the relay. " 'Doc' is sure some horse," said Mr. Power. "You've trot to hand it to 'Doc' Any time they get away from 'Doc,' believe me, they got to go some." The Round-up th's year promises t,i eclipse last year's performance by a hundred per cent, thinks Mr. Pow er. The wildest meanest bronchos from over the United States will be there as will the riders for them. From Colorado, Wyoming. Utah, Mon tana, Washington everywhere where there are bronchos and riders. The hills of northern Arizona will be made to give up their untamed, un branded steeds; the Hole-in-the-Walt country of Wyoming will be scouted for buckers and the eastern Oregon manklllers will be rounded up for the fray. ;!.-( Saddle Prize. The first prize for the winner of tho bucking broncho contest will be a $350 saddle, said to be one of the finest hand carved saddles ever turn ed out. It is now being made by E. L. Power & Son of Pendleton, and '.t will be exhibited at the Seattle Potlach. afterward at Portland and nt the Cheyenne Frontier sjruv, which will be held the latter part of August. It will no doubt attract a great number of outside riders. Resides the bad horses that took part in the contest lust year Dyna mite, I.ightf ot. fitue Diazes and the Nelson horse there will be other bad ones from other states, including Teddy Roosevelt, Jr., said to be the worst horse in Wyoming. Teddy Roosevelt Jr., is a new find and he Is said to be 19 times morse than Steamboat who could buck more ways than was ever dreamed of. Steam boat has lost many of his laurels, for many cowpunchers have successfully negotiated Teddv. Then there will be a number of other horses yet maned the owners can't think names that sound vicious enough. Woman Rider's Clinllenge, Mrs. Dell P.lanchett, Wyoming's fa mous woman rider, will be at tho Round-up with a challenge to any wo man r der in the world to ride a buek- I ing broncho without pulling leather. She rides em all alike unit it is saui that few men can stick to the saddle in emergencies as well as she. liuffalo Rill has promised to be present at the Roundup this year, as has Ruffalo Vernon, the famous bull dogger. Other noted bull doggers will also be present. Bull dogging consists of catch'.ng a wild Texas steer by the horns and throwing him and holding him on the ground a dangerous pastime accent on the dangerous. The date for the 1911 Round-up has been fixed for September 14, 15 and 16. SHORT IJXE PAYS HIGH PRICK I OR LAM) Idaho Falls, June 21. There is much speculation in this part of the state in regard to the probable use of the Oregon Short Line Railroad company wl)l put to the recent tract of state lands bought by a represen tative of that company at the recent sale of state lands heJd at St. An thony, the county seat of Fremont county. The pr;ce paid, 1120 per acre, breaks all the records of the land of fice for the sale of land of this char acter which is practically unflt'for agricultural use The land is situat ed on the Idaho Falls-Yellowstone railroad, nine miles northwest of Is land Park and adjoining the famous Railroad ranch, the property of Gen eral Manager Bancroft of the Oregon Short Line The railroad ranch Is a famous hunting and fishing resort patronized very largely by the east ern friends of the officials of Ore gon Short Line and where it is said that Mrs. E. H. Hariman has signi fied her Intention of spending this summer. The tract sold Is in the heart of the most picturesque and rugged sec tions of Fremont county, deep in the mountains and accessible only by means of a not too well defined trial. The tract proper is watered by the most famous trout streams of the state and Is within a few miles of the famous big game country of Jack son Hole, Wyo., and within a few miles of the border of the Yellowstone na tional park. The tract is heavily timbered and has always been consid ered an ideal camping, hunting and fishing spot by those familiar with the best locations for this sport. Some people are of the opinion that the property has been bought for one of the large eastern clubs which will use the place as a club grounds and hunting and fishing reserve, while others are of the opinion that a big sanitarium is to be located there in the center of the great pine forests. The high price paid for land consid ered worthless, causes the feeling that some one or company of means ex pects to make permanent and exten sive improvements. Taft to Address Hankers.
