When Henry O, Sproat, the "Oregon Apple King" of fered Mrs. Frances Rosenblatt, an at tractive widow, niece of the late Nel son Morris, millionaire packer of Chi cago, $50,000 to marry him she ac cepted, not because she needed the money, but Just to see If Sproat was in earnest. Now they are to be mar ried in June and Mrs. Rosenblatt will get the money in advance. The romantic story of Sproafs courtship, his monetry offer and per sistence was confirmed by both par ties to the agreement today In Venice, where both are visiting. Not many months ago Sproat came to the Southern California beaches to recover from the shock of his wife's death. A short time later Mrs. Kos enblatt arrived from Chicago with her family, among whom was her broth' er. She had just lost ner nusuanu and was trying to forget her bereave ment. School Picnic Held. County School Superintendent Welles and wife returned today from Hermtston where they attended the graduating exercises last night. Cresswell, a farmer of Pen dleton, reported to the police last night that he had been robbed of $500, but "he was unable to glvo any of the circumstances. He admitted ! he had been in many saloons drink ing and he thinks the money was ta ken from him' in one of them. He came here to take care of a shipment of grain. He has a brother-in-law, C. H. Joe Murphy is mourning the loss of his little cockerel spaniel which he was forced to kill because it was sub ject to violent fits. The dog was a blooded one and was valued by Mr. Murphy quite highly. Its father was owned by a saloonman and Its mother by a preacher but Mr. Murphy de clares the cross was fine. Court Meets Monday. A special session of the circuit court will commence Monday morning for the purpose of cleaning up the dock et. There are six cases set for trial Disorderlies In Police Court. Floyd Heathman, Ralph Peel and Click Humphrey were booked in the police court this morning on charges of disorderly conduct, the first plead ing guilty but the third declaring his intention of standing trial. Up until cress time, the trial had not been held. It seems that the three men became engaged in a fight for which they were arrested. Vaughan Finch and Chris Blum were also booked on the charge of using obscene langu age on the street and will also stand trial. Three drunks completed the docket. A Very Short Runaway. The big bay team attached to the I wagon of the Columbia Produce com I pany, started on a mad dash this mor ning about 11 o'clock but came to a ! stop in a heap very abruptly. They attempted to make their way down the alley between the Frazier Book Store and the Alexander Department store, but the wagon collided with the buildings and threw the horses, one on top of the other. Considerable difficulty was experienced In liberat ing the horses from the tangle but this was finally accomplished with several narrow escapes from flying heels. No damage was done to horses or wagon. Reward Clifvk Exhibited. Jeweler A. L. Schaefer is today ex hibiting In his window the check he received from the Jewelers' Secun.y Alliance to pay as reward for the capture and conviction of Ivan U'ng dahl, the thief who broke the win dow of the. Schaefer Jewelry store and stole therefrom several articles of Jewelry. The check Is for $100 and will be turned over to Sheriff T. IJ. Taylor and Chief T. P.. Gurdnne, who effected the capture, and Mr. Schaefer feels that the money was 1 well earned as the officers went to work without a clew. To rob the Fremont bank by blowing the safe with "soup" they had made themselves and then off to Mexico with the loot. This was the scheme of four Capitol Hill boy stu dents at the Longfellow school, nc cording to the statement made to th police by Leslie Turner, 14 years old one of the-members of the gang, short ly after his arrest as he was prowling about Pike street Just before day break. The boy was armed with big revolver. A story, of which the police are skeptical, however, Is that i severa members of the gang were responsible for a series of safe blowing Jobs I Fremont about 18 months ago. Thl part of the statement by Turner, th police believe, was simply told him by his confederates to Impress their wicked character on him In becoming a member of the gang.
