Total receipts of hogs at North Portland this week were only 441 head so far as the marketable lots of swine were concerned. The remain ing 887 head were brought to this city from Missouri river territory on contact to a local meat company. Nominal swine values at North Tortland: nest blockers $6.85 6.90 Medium light 6.75 Heavy packers 6.506.60 Rough packers $5.00 C6. 00 Sheep Soil at Decline. While only one load of sheep en tered the yards today and this one went to another city, sales of sheep were made late yesterday afternoon at a decline of 10 to 15 cents from previous quotations. On account of the greater offerings of sheep In the North Portland yards recently, the wants of the killers seem to have been satisfied temporarily and for that reason they were not eager to take a surplus unless the supply could be secured for less. Yearling wethers sold late yester day afternoon at $4.60 for stock that averaged 95 pounds. While these of ferings were not first class, the sale places tops but 15e above that fig ure. At South Omaha today there was another Improvement In the sheep and lamb trade and prices were 10c higher than yesterday. Receipts there for the day were but 4000 head. The market there Is practically on the same basis as Portland, therefore shippers from this section could do better at home owing to the lesser freight charge and shrinkage. Wheat Continues Strong. The new 750 barrel flouring mill of Ralfour, Guthrie & Co., located on the water front, will be operated for the first time June 1. For the occasion the big exporting firm has been saving up all the choice parcels of wheat It has purchased in the Pacific northwest during the present season and a fight for con trol of the best trade will be started. The Portland mill is the only mill at present owned by Balfour. Guth rle & Co. on the Pacific coast. The firm therefore Intends to make this city Its four headquarters and not only will the regular local business be done but the export and California markets wll be invaded. The operation of this mill at Port land by the big English exporting concern means that this city has been recognized as the milling center of the Pacific coast. John Grant has been secured as MR. A system of 200 or more retail grocery and meat stores, which will run under one manage ment, and, It Is promised, will re duce the cost of living to Chlcagoans 15 per cent, will be started within a few months by a big corporation now being formed. The methods introduced by the United Cigar Store company will be carried into the grocery trade. A big department store is interested In the scheme, it is reported, and one of the big stock yards concerns may be interested. Rumors concerning the project caused a decided stir in department store, stock yards and South Water street circles. Groceries, meats, fruits, fresh vege tables and bakery goods will be dealt in, it is said. If successfully launched, the corporation will control the bulk of the retail trade In these lines in Chicago. Its policy of buying in large quantit'es from producers, cutting out all Jobbing profits and retailing at close prices to the consumer will play havoc with ex'stlng conditions in the trade. DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Jack returned home from college, where he had won high honors as a student of ancient languages, but he pleaded Ignorance one day when his young sister asked him to translate a sign she had seen of an optician's which read thus: "Con sultu ?abo utyo urey es." Jack struggled manfully with it f:r several minutes and gave It up. "It Isn't good Latin," he said. "There are some words in it that are Latin. The others aren't anyhow. It doesn't make sense." "That is what I said." replied his sister, "but cook translates it with out any trouble. She says It means 'Consult us about your eyes.' " A SHAME1J-.RS PARROT. A little while ago Jones managed to get a splendid record of his -own parrot's cries on a cylinder. Ily way of experiment he set It go'.'.ig while the parrot was in the room. "Tretty Toll! Scratch a poll! Give us a bit of sugar, uncle! Whe-e-w." whirred the machine. The parrot looked somewhat scared, and tried hard to scratch her held with one of ther claws. "I want some sugar some sugar! Whe-e-w!" came from the gramo phone. "Glorious Julia!" screeched Tolly, as she looked down at the trumpet, "What a beak for sweetstuff !" PAYMENT Ob ETON IMPROVE.
