Maclean, secretary of the chamber of commerce, is sending let ters to manufacturers in all parts of the Inland empire, asking them to prepare lists of articles manufactur ed in the various communities. These lists will be compiled and published so that consumers may ask for the goods made In the Inland -empire when making purchases. He says in his letter. "It Is believed that if the people of the several communities know what is manufactured there they will give preference to these articles, oth er conditions being equal. "This will Increase the business of the manufacturers and will result in the employment of a larger number of workmen, which, In turn, means larger payrolls and more money put Into circulation throughout the in land empire." Hill, visited Salem nnd looked' over Its beauties, It was not known that he was here on a mat ter of the utmost Importance to the capital city, but this seems to be the fact, since the development of a ru mor this morning that his visit was In connection with closing a deal for the Salem, Falls City & Western rail road, with Its terminus In West Salem. The purpose of Mr. Hill, It Is said. Is to acquire the property, electrify it and bring It Into Salem as a connec t'on of the Oregon Electric. To do this a magnificent bridge, probably a drawbridge, wilt have to bo built across the Willamette. The Importance of this plan to Sa lem cannot be over-estimated. The electrification of the excellent road between here and Dallas will bring every part of Polk county within a few minutes' ride of Salem, 20 min utes being sufficient for the trip from this city to Dallas. 'It will mean that Salem will become tho metropolis of tho Willamette valley and the point of supply for one of the richest por tions of western Oregon. The deal for the taking over of the steam rail road by the Hill Interests. It is said, is not completed, but has gone for ward sufficiently to warrant the pre diction that tho electrification of the line will probably begin early In the spring. ITS YOUR KIDNEYS.
