Kruttschnitt, director of maln tainance of the Harriman lines passed through Pendleton about ten o'clock yesterday morning on a tour of inspec tion. He only stopped in tne city for a few minutes, long enough to make a hurried inspection of the depot grounds. He was accompanied on hist special train by J. P. O'Brien, vice president and general manager, J. D. Stack, assistant general manager, and W. Bollons, superintendent of the Oregon division of the O. R. & N. ' Saturday afternoon was a read let ter occasion for the little love god for in the space of a few hours sij different couples had applied to the county clerk for tickets to the haven of marital bliss. Licenses were is sued to the following persons: Robert Lee Fleshraan of Union county, and Mintie Evalena Henderson of Uma tilla county; Otis Hake nnd Delia Robertson both of this county; Wil liam W. Brown and Eva Eldridge both of this county; Frank X. Smith and Ella May Piper, both of this county; Paul Bushman, Jr., and Irene Parr, both of this county; and Frank W. Breed of Walla Walla county, Washington, and Addie C. Davis of Umatilla county. A Vnhs Fire Alarm. Somebody became unduly frighten ed at noon today when they saw smoke curling upwards from a trash fire in the rear of the house on the corner of Court and College streets occupied by some of the men In charge of the Twohy Brothers' construction work. A fire alarm was immediately turned In and the fire department followed by several hun dred pedestrians, dashed up Court street, only to discover their mistake. A feature of the fake fire was the mad dash of Foreman Ryan in one of the Baker cabs. Someone had telephoned the young chief that his possessions were in danger of being incinerated and he was the first to ar rive on the scene. Dr. Smith Honored. At the meeting of the state board of health held in Portland recently Dr. C. J. Smith of this city was hon ored through being elected aa vice president of the board for the coming year. Dr. Andrew C. Smith of Port land was made president. Dr. C. J, Smith took a prominent part in the proceedings of the board, he being the member to present the resolution asking the legislature to combine the offices of the state food and dairy commissioner and that of the state board of health. It is a move in the interests of greater efficiency and also greater economy. Other members of the state board are Dr. W. B. Morse, of Salem; Dr. E. B. Pickle, of Med ford; Dr. Kinney of Astoria; Dr. E. A. Pierce of Portland, and Dr. C. S. White of Portland. Dr. W. H. Lytle, state veterinarian, also attended the session. Slater Has Good Luck. It seems that Attorney R. J. Slater of this city had unusually good for tune In his mission to Washington, D. C, to urge the Interior department to give him a favorable decision on the status of his desert land entry near this city. A Washington dispatch, in speaking of his visit, says: "As he entered the office of the department official who had the matter In charge, he found him in the act of signing a favorable decision, Slater had a desert claim of 320 acres, Into which the reclamation service had cut with the Umatilla project and the service Insisted that Slater must take water from the government project The department of the interior rules that he need not do so. She takes him home and there ho is met by his wife and mother. .The scene is very affecting. He at once reforms and goes to work at the trade he learned In prison. The reformation brings him happiness and respect from all. This a Yankee feature film. Sunshine After Storm. A young couple quarreled on the beach, she eloped with another man who prom ised to marry her which he fails to do. After years of wandering she finally leaves him. In despair she Is taken In by the salvation army, who sent her home and while at sea was shipwrecked jafter floating on the wreckage for hours she Is picked up by her former lover. (Seelhe re sult of Sunshine after Storm.) A very Interesting drama. Mistress and Maid. A young mis tress and her maid arrive at a sum mer hotel to find out what strangers really think of her the mistress changes places with her maid. The matd Is now the mistress and the mistress Is the maid. The life guard offers to tench the maid how to swim. Its fun being only a maid oft for a row to the light house. She is made prisoner by the maid. "Keep that girl a prisoner and I'll pay you well. I am a prisoner In the upper room of the light house. Save me." The dog takes a message to her lover.
