BASKETOAIJ.I team OF CHAMPIONSHIP STKIPK Chapman f sharp Houser Dudley Opening Game of Season Resulted in Victory for Local Players By Score of 46 to Two Pendleton Forwards Do Classy Work. Pendleton High school has anoth er basketball team of championship calibre. This fact was demonstrated last night in the gymnasium on the hill when the tossers from Athena high school were overwhelmingly de feated by the score of 40 to 2. Tho game had not been in progress three minutes before it became evi dent that the local boys had perfect ed a wonderful scoring machine and that the visitors were hopelessly out classed. In passing. In goal throwing, in guarding and In generul team work, Captain Devlne's proteges were devel oped to a fine finesse and from whis tle to whistle they played with a snap and speed that was simply amazing. The work of Iioylen and Chapman as a pair of forwards has never been equalled in the history of the school they represent, Boylen's cleverness being particularly noticeable last night. Of the total 46 points he was directly responsible for 22. Houser, the big center, who was Instrumental In defeating the local boys last year when he played on the Walla Walla high school team, proved a valuable man last night and annexed 12 points for his team during the course of the game. Chapman scored ten while A. Jordan contributed the other two. But, though the Jordan brothers did not throw many baskets, to their work in following and covering up the fast forwards of Athena can e attributed the smallness of the score on the vis itors' side of the tally sheet. Not' a single basket was thrown over them and but few chances at the goal were secured. In justice to the Athena boys, how ever, It must be admitted that they were handicapped by the low celling on the local gym and might have se cured more baskets had It been high er. They acknowledge though that they were greatly outclassed and one of them this morning expressed the belief that the Pendleton team could win the northwest lnterscholaatlc championship If they keep up the pace they have started. The lineup of the two teams was as follows: Pendleton. Athena. Boylcn f Lieuallen A T -.1 .. - . b McEwen C. Jordan g.HIll, Worthlngton The game waa refereed by Prin cipal Jack Keefe of the Weston high school, who Is as efficient In this po sition as any man who ever appeared ii a local floor. Nat Kimball acted as score keeper. TO BE SEEN AT SHOW A pair of the famous Ayrdale ter rier dogs nre being shown at the poultry show In the armory on Court street this afternoon and they have attracted a great deal of attention. They will be present at the show again this evening at the request of a num ber of dog fanciers who were unable to get up to the hall this afternoon. The dogs are owned Jointly by Al DeSpaln and E. F. Averlll and have been pronounced by those capable ot judging to be splendid specimens of what Is considered the greatest breed of dogs in the world. Tho dogs are not much for looks but are said to possess all tho good qualities of all the other breeds and few or none oT their faults. As pets find guards for children, as watch dogs, and hunting dogs for big game of all kinds, they are said to have no equal. Though they are not large they are extremely fierce fighters and single dogs have been known to kill cougars and Lynx In fair fights. But despite their fierceness when forced Into combat they are possessed of the very best of dispositions, never pick a quarrel ami will accept the worst kind of treatment from chil dren without resenting It.
