TIIE PAST, Still shall the soul around it call The shadows which It gather ed here, And painted on the eternal wall The pa"St shall reappear. He would not even stand for an appro priation to enable the school to fin ish the year and pay Its honest debts to its instructors. For Bowerman to "sctft soap" peo ple about the Eastern Oregon normal a: this time merely shows the class of politician he is. He is a charlatan a political mountebank. He is re sorting to tactics that would be dis creditable to a dog catcher. He Is changing colors under fire. He Is a trimmer and a flopper. He Is a Jekyl and Hyde type of statesman. He is entitled to no votes from Uma tilla county. He is not entitled even to the respect of the honest men and women of this county. BEWARE OF FLOPPER S. In his aidress at the court house last night Senator Chamberlain warn ed local people against relying upon legislative candidates who subscribed tc statement No. 1 under pressure and at the eleventh hour. He said "death bed confessions" cannot be relied up on because the sick men may get well and then change their views. He told a good story Illustrating the point. Senator Chamberlain's reference to this subject was timely In view of the :ocal senatorial contest. Senator ?mith has always been a statement : lan and he has been tried in the fire during the past eight years. Peo pie know he stands by his principles. Mr. Burgess, his opponent entered the campaign as an anti-statement man. He is an assemblyito and was brought into the race by assemblyites vho hate statement Xo. 1 and have always hated it. But Burgess found he was on the unpopular side of the fence and he has tried to flop. He may be entirely sincere and may In tend to stay flopped. But , people cannot tell about It. It Is not safe to send that sort of men to the state sen- j ate. Had the last legislature been So Bowerman did not mean Wes- j composed of such men they would ton, Ashland or Monmouth when he j hav teen "easy plucking" for Orms xnade his statement to the effect tha: I r,y McHarg. the shyster who came onnal graduates had cost this state out trom Washington to get the state J12.500 each. It gives J an insight into the class of "data" j that was used against the normal schools two years ago and is being used now. It shows something of the calibre of the assembly can liiate for governor of Oregon. ; If Bowerman did not refer to the schools at Weston, Ashland or Mon mouth why -did he not come out in his speech and say so? His hearers thought he referred to those schools. Disinterested men believed he did and Caking his statement as true became prejudiced against those schools. His statement that graduates cost 12,500 rh has gone abroad over the state sad Is "hurting the three normal schools in their fight to gain support siider the Initiative. It 1b natural people thought Bower. referred to Weston, Ashland and who has stood for statement No. 1 all the time. Beware of the sudden SMASH THIS CLIQUE. The plea for party regularity is made by the local assembly brigade. "Vot'er straight" is their cry and 'they have their ward and precinct heelers busy all over the county trying to get republicans into line. But their stheme will not work because the re Ifblicans of this county do not trust the self appointed party leaders in Vtndleton. These "leaders" do not represent the best of the republican party in Umatilla county. They mere ly represent a minority faction of the party. They represent the assembly or stand-pat faction. The great bulk oi the republicans of Umatilla county are progressive and they do not be lieve in machine rule. They don't v ant to see a few local peanut poli- I ' ! This year the republicans of Uma tilla county have a chance to break - - ...... ;up this little clique that wants to con- ITbelled by Bowerman. In its news publishes a statement, compiled from official records, showing that during Che year referred to the Drain normal received but $10,600 from the state Cor all purposes and the school had 14 in its last graduating class. Bow erman should now offer an apology rer the grave of the Drain normal school for he has siandered the dead. The East Oregonian rejoices that at last the truth about the normals Is coming forth and coming from the school killers themselves.
