Future aviators will be arm ed against Injury from falls by pneu matic rubber suits. A competition for designs is being nrranged by the National Aerial league. The pneu matic suit Is to protect the air man In falling from moderate heights. The parachute, which will be carried on the aeroplane, must be made to open automatically. Some of the compettors will doubt less work out Rudyard Killing's sug gestion for an nir man's pneumatic suit which the famous author pub lished In an English automobile pa per recently. "I suggest," he wrote, "a helmet of rubbe. inflated on the crown of the head and round the back and over the collar bones. What you want Is the protection of the neck against a backward or forward wrench. The height of the padding on the shoulders ought to cushion off the worst of a sideways wrench, and the rubber, 'being moderately thick, acts as n slight protection against bits of broken stays and things. The main thing would be to give the spinal cord a chance not to be snapped, ami to protect the dome of the head from fracture. You would have to make the rolls under the chin pretty thick, so that the head could be driven down on to them without too much harm " For Rent One large room with heat. The British preparations for a possible advance of a military force Into Tibet have excited adverse comment here, where they have come in the nature of a surprise. It is pointed out that England's action Is contrary to the convention conclud ed with China and Tibet and to the Anglo-Russian treaty regarding Cen tral Asia concluded In August, 1907. The clause regarding the prohibition of scientific expeditions into Tibet, however, will expire In a month's time, and it is asked Ironically wheth er the advance can be styled a scien tific one. The Vassische Zeitung says: "Why does England send forces into Tibet? Is the expedition Intended to com pensate England for Russia's progress In the north of Persia and the position she has attained in Manchuria? "These questions are unsolved rid dles. The real purpose can scarcely be any other than the restoration of the Younghusband treaty, which the English government repudiated after its conclusion." LONG STANDING CLAIM HAS BEEN SETTLED Vienna. A financial settlement has at last been reached, after years of negotiations, between the lawyers of Prince Philip of Sax Coburg and his divorced wife, Princess Louise of Bel gium. The princess has admitted a debt of $400,000 to her former hus band. Under the present agreement, the monthly payments hitherto made to the princess by rrlnce Fhtlip will he dispensed with, and he will compound for the allowance by the payment of a lump sum of $200,000, which will be deducted from the amount already owed by the princess to her former husband. The prince's claims are se cured upon the provisional division of the estate left by the late King Leopold. DOCTORS ABANDON CITY EIGHT YEARS DEATinif.ESS Madrid. FRUIT CROP NEAR PENDLETON FREEWATER-MILTON NOT ONLY FRUIT DISTRICT Growers Along Umatilla River and in Pilot Rock Section Have Many Car loads to Ship. While other sections of Umatilla county, considering themselves the real fruit districts have been boast ing of their phenomenal crops and sending out hurry calls for help In the harvest of big red apples and yel low pears, the fruit crop in the im mediate vicinity of Pendleton and along the Umatilla river, has been lost sight of. It Is a fact, however, that the fruit crop of this section is one worth considering. , It is estimated that there are six carloads of apples on the Oliver farm alone, while nearly every ranch along the river between this city and Yoa kum contains from a half to three car loads of this fruit. In the Pilot Rock section there are also several carloads which must pass through Pendleton in shipping. The growers are beginning to be somewhat apprehensive by reason of the fact that no buyers have so far showed up. There is no organiza tion of fruit growers at this point and In past seasons the orchard ista have depended upon outside buyers coming In. It is, however, that the problem will solve itself, since while the northwest supply of fruit Is something phenomenal, there seems to be a gen eral shortage throughout most of the states of the Mississippi valley and those farther east.
