THE PEOPLES SEVEN BOX CARS (Special Correspondence.) Umatilla, Ore., Aug. 30. H. W. Jessie, the popular O. R. & N. night dispatcher, has resigned and left on a short visit to friends In Winona, af ter which he will go on a visit to his home in the east. The best wishes of his many friends here follow him. Mr. and Mrs. John McTurlen have gone on a visit to Idaho. Two reverend sisters of the Order of St. Joseph of Lewiston, were here soliciting alms for their hospital. While in the city they were guests of Mrs. Pound. Fire in the local O. R. & N. yards, west end, destroyed seven boxcars loaded with dressed lumber, shingles and Merchandise. It would appear from the location of the fire in the cars that it was of incendiary origin. In addition to other damage it burned two or three Western Union telegraph poles, cutting off connection with the west for several hours. The damage to cars and loss of same with mer chandise would easily run to fifteen thousand dollars. The ranchers are now all through with the alfalfa crop and reports say that it has been exceptionally good. A fourth cut will aso be cut on or about September 20. W. H. Swltzler has gone on a visit to Tacoma. Mrs. Effie Jessee of Indiana is vis iting Miss Hazel Means. Professor and Mrs. T. M. Ghorm ley have arrived bacK to the city af ter a pleasant vacation spent in dif ferent parts of Oregon. The profes sor will have charge or the schools again this season. Mrs. H. M. Pullman, Wash. A nurse In a le cal hospital, who l a devotee of horseback riding, recently was thrown from her horse. She struck the ground fairly on the top of her head, but this was crowned with a large and firmly built "rat" which ao "broke the fall" that the young lady was un injured. Her escape from a fractur ed skull Is attributed by Dr. Campbell to the "rat." Wullnwa Woman Dies. Wallowa, Or. Mrs. R. E. Flnley died In this city Wednesday, aged 8 years. 6 months and 1 day. Rachel Eliza Flnley, w hose maiden name was Powers, was born In Henry county; Tennessee, February 1Z, IS 30 and at the age of 19 married William Fin ley. She made her home In Tennes see and Kentucky until last March, when she came to Wallowa to make her home with her aona She is sur vived by four sons, Thomas, John, Joshua and Henry, all of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Frances Wlsehart of Calloway county Kentucky. He makes the defense that he was engaged In interstate commerce and that the Oregon law is unconstitutional. Dis trict Attorney Levens will appear for the state and Gustav Anderson, city attorney, has been engaged to handle the case for Cavers. HI Hits Illumed for Wheat Prices. Walla Walla, Wash. Until the millers of the northwest quit bidding high for wheat there will De no large sales made, declares II. P. Kershaw of Taeoma, representative of the Fransoll Grain Buying company of that city. He says that the stagna tion in the market is due to the mill ers' boosting wheat until the farmers believe the real market price Is where It Is now Quoted. No grain can be bought by export ers nt this price, he claims, and far mers must come to the realization that their product Is not worth what has been the price. Wheat is now rated on the basis of club at 80 cents. Despite this statement, exporters here have been offering the prevail ing price, but farmers are not un willing to sell, and last ween nearly a million bushels changed hands at this figure. Lightning Kills Mai. Oswego, Or. Ray Thomas was struck by lightning and Instantly kill ed here Sunday. He was the 23-year- old son of J. W. Thomas, mayor of Oswego. The young man was killed at 1 o'clock, during a storm which lasted about three-quarters of an hour. His body was found by Mr. Jenne. of Jenne & Erter, about 20 minutes later. The young man was boarding with Mr. Jenne, who conducts a butcher shop at Oswego. The lad had been driving the wagon. Just before the lightning killed him he had gone to the barn to feed the horses. Sud denly there was a loud report and the vivid flash struck the barn. Investi gation plainly showed where the flame had struck the cupola, and' had run down a rafter and Into a post beside Thomas body. From the appearance of the body, the electricity seemed to have struck him In the back. Finds Remedy for Pest. Wenatchee, Wash. The red spider, a fruit pest which has been a source of great annoyance In fruit sections In the northwest for the last few years, has at last been conquered In the Wenatchee valley by R. E. Trum ble, professor of horticulture In the Wenatchee high school and well known to fruit growers for his study of many of the big fruit problems. The appearance of the spider in large quantities during the season made some preventive necessary, and after many experiments Professor Trumble has been successful In find ing a spray that Is being used and en tirely eliminates the pests from or chards which have been affected. The department of horticulture In the local high school has become In dispensable and the patrons of the school are exerting every effort In aiding the school board to extend the scope of the work.
