COURT STREET EIRE DESTROYS BUILDING PETERS BOTTLING WORKS GOES VP IX FLAMES Loss Falls ou William Roesch, Owner of Building, and H. F. Peters Fire men Had Four Streams on Blaze Origin Is Unknown. Through a fire of mysterious origin the frame building at the southeast corner of Court and Thompson streets and belonging to William Roesch was practically destroyed this forenoon. The loss falls upon Mr. Roesch and upon H. F. Peters, owner of th bot tling establishment occupying the building. Shortly after 11 o'clock this fore noon the building was found to be ablaze and the fire was under good headway before the alarm was given. One report is to the effect that the fire started In the basement while an other version is that the fire started within a double wall and was due to the electric wiring. There was no stove In the building ana consequent ly there was no danger of fire from such a source. By the time the fire department reached the scene a heavy column of smoke was issuing forth from the top of the building and the fire was ap parently In the attic. Owing to this fact it was a difficult fire to combat. The firemen were forced to cut holes In the slanting roof of the building and they soon had several streams playing upon the blase. Yet despite this it required a half hour or longer to extinguish the persistent fire. The burned building was occupied entirely by the Pioneer bottling works, owned by H. F. Peters. The front part of the place was used for a near beer saloon. It was formerly the Brewery saloon. Upon his plant and stock Mr. Peters carried $1000 Insur ance with Bentley & Leffingwell. At 1 o'clock this afternoon William Roesch, owner of the building, had not computed his loss. He has some insurance upon the structure wnicn will cover his loss at least In part No damage was Inflicted to the brewery building wbich adjoins the burned building on the east. The solid brick wall of the brewery pre vented the flames from spreading in that direction. Newsy Notes of Pendleton On Hunting Trip. Col. J. H. HOCKEFKIJ-ER'S BATHS OF WHISKY ARE SCOFFED AT London. The cabled reports about John D. Rockefeller's whisky bath have caused a good deal of amuse ment and no little Interest here, but physicians scoff at the Idea. Said one medical expert well known for his knowledge of the virtues and vices of alcohol: "Alcohol applied tothe skin can have no more effect In supplying the system with nutrition than would oil, the value of which in Its right place Rockefeller knows better than I do. Applied to a black eye alcohol, gent ly administered, has a soothing effect. It allays pain, prevents swelling and as an absorbant and solvent under certain conditions Is Invaluable. Taken- Internally, say when you are physically numb, it is a capital stim ulant. But from one end of Harley street to the other you will not get a physician to tell you that either in ternally or externally It can add vital ity to the tissues. "An old man needs nutritive food in sparing quantities, but with all re spect to Dr. Biggar, he is only, It seems to me, exciting his patient and falsifying Instead of Increasing his WtaJHy. Besides when a body Is heated, as It must be under a mas sage, alcohol freezes the pores. Mud baths, vapor baths and other baths open the natural gateway of the hu man system, but this plan locks them up. It Is ridiculous." Here Is how he sizes up the typi cal women of Europe: "Let us begin with the French wo man. She is not beautiful in the first place. She Is not even pretty. She Is short and thin much too thin; she has a very short waist. She has no shoulders and no hips. Her nose is hooked she is entirely without our graceful poised nose. Her complex Ion Is usually a work of art, and her eyes are large and pretty, but her face as a whole Is a disappointment, while her figure Is very poor. Her real charm lies In her clothes and the way she wears them. Besides, she Is always a brunette, and the monotony of the type is most wearisome. "The German woman Is heavy and muscular In appearance. She, too. Is short, and yet unlike the French wo man. She Is veur stout much too stout. Her features are hard and harsh, and even her red cheeks soon acquire a blown' look. She has abso lutely no neck and she is always a blonde there Is no variation there either. "I find serious fault with the Eng. llsh woman. She is too long. She has done so much walking that she has lengthened herself Into a living slab. Her shoulders are high and square, too, Instead of sloping. Her face Is strong rather than beautiful. She has a long chin and a high forehead. She has very slight bust development and she often stoops as if she were afraid of her own weight. Besides, she dresses so badly. "The Italian girl Is apt to be over developed. The girls of Greece are too small and thin, I have never seen a goddess among them. The girls in Austria-Hungary were really the most attractive ones I saw in Europe, but they are somewhat too small. Too see, it all comes back to the American girl." He continued: "The American girl is tall and not yet too tall, slender, and yet devel oped. She baa beautiful sloping shoulders and a long waist. Shs has hips, though she is rather foolishly trying to conceal the damning cir cumstance at present. She has beau tifully long, exquisitely modeled arms. Her feet are slender, if not tiny. Her features are regular and clear cut Shs has the most beautiful chin in the world, round and yet straight Her profile Is exquisite. Her neck is neith er too long nor too short, and she dresses perfectly." Card of Thanks. I wisb to extend my most sincere thanks to the many kind friends and especially the Knights of Pythias lodge for the many willing acts of as sistance rendered during the late Ill ness and death of my loving husband. Russia's scourge, the cholera, continues to spread with alarming rapidity, particularly In the southern mining districts and in St. Petersburg, where the conditions are fast approaching the proportions of the great epidemic of 1908. Figures furnished today by the Cen tral Sanitary Bureau show that in the week from July 24th to July 30th there were 15,244 cases of cholera and 6,944 deaths. Of these 4.870 cases and 233 deaths were reported from the Province of Tegaterlnoslay and the territory of the Don Cossacks in South Russia. A report from the United Mine Own ers' association, covering forty-eight mines and four foundries, gives 2, 970 cases and 1,250 deaths. The ex tent of the panic among the miners is shown by figures furnished from eighteen mines, from which 18,000 of the 46,000 employees have fled. In answer to the appeal of the as sociation for special measures to check the epidemic and stem the pan ic, which threatens to stop the pro duction of coal and Iron In South Russia, the government today decid ed to send to the mining region a special commission to study the situ ation anil organize sanitary preven tive work. The desertion of work by the labor ers extends also to the railroad em ployees and the workmen in the ports In South Russia, threatening to crip ple the export movement of grain. Advices from Yekatedlnoslav report that the transport of the crops Is at a standstill. The epidemic continues to make enormous progress In the capital, where the dally average of cases Jumped last week to thirty. The high record reached in 1908 with 412 cases a day.
