The thresh ing outfit of O'Harra & Mi-Bride niet with an accident the other Jay in the sudden breaking of the cylinder shaft of their machine, which resulted in two or more days' loss of time before repairs could be made but now work has been resumed and everything is going along satisfactorily. The threshing of the grain on the Earl Dudley farm north of town is averaging about $5 bushels to the acre and of good quality. The wind which prevailed here for a day or so shattered some of the over-ripe wheat and caused quite a loss in averaging up the yield. As a rule labor during the harvest ing season is always scarce in this vi cinity but this year it is an exception for apparently the threshermen have been well supplied and very few in quiries have been made, "Where can get a man to work?" It is also re ported that there is a better class of workmen this year than usual, men who stay with their Jobs. Miss Ethel Jamieson of Walla Wal la is here as a guest of her aunt, Mrs. Minnie Walker. George B. Baker, who is employed as telegrapher on the Chicago & Milwaukee railroad at Alberton, Mont,, is home visiting his father, M. A. Baker. So far this season the business at the Weston brickyards has come up to expectations of the proprietors. In the neighborhood of one million brick has been disposed of, with some or ders yet to fill. The yard will likely run until the cold weather sets in for it is wished to have a good stock on hand at the opening of the spring trade. Miss Lucile Kemp, daughter of Ifr. and Mrs. Ira Kemp, Is visiting rela tives at Spokane, Wash. Miss Stella O'Harra, who has been visiting at Walla Walla for the past two weeks, has returned. Mrs. Fred Kershaw and little daughter are at the Oregon metropo lis viciting with her sister. Mrs. Lillian Fredrichs is again at her father's home, Mr. O. W. It Is believed that the Am erican Smelting and Refining com pany Is behind the activity. Superin tendent Fred W. Scofield is on the ground and has employed a force of men to overhaul the machinery and equipment of the smelter. The Information of the intentions of the smelter company to begin again garnering the gold of the district. which has practically been abandoned since 1907, was brought to Portland today by David Wilson of Spokane. He is one of the pioneers of the east ern Oregon gold camp and is making preparations to remove his family to Portland, where they will take up their home. A clearing house for goods is the latest solution suggested in dealing with the enormous quanti ties of merchandise and produce which daily arrive here, and a special meet ing of the London chamber of com merce is to be called to consider the plan. Its originators say that as soon as it is carried out it will at once set free the 30000,000 square feet at present occupied by the freight de pots of London, and place at the dis posal of the railroad companies a capital of $500,000,000 which is at present locked up in those stations. Briefly stated, the idea is to ac quire a site near King's Cross railroad station, so as to be within easy access of the principal terminal, and to erect upon it a clearing house capable of dealing with the freight traffic now centered at the various stations. The goods will be brought from the warehouses or the receiving depots to the clearing house in bulk, and thence transferred by means of cranes to the sorting platforms. There the goods will be placed 'in a "container" bear ing the name of the particular rail way on whose system the delivery place of the parcel is situated. Then the mere pressing of an elec tric button will serve to transfer the container from the platform to the railway truck, on which it will pro ceed tu its journey's end. Count's Book on Africa. Hornet, Sold by V. S. to Private Par tit's. Starts on Mysterious Voyaso. Norfolk. Va. Forced to spend 20 hours in Hampton Roads because a portion of her crew got "cold feet" the gunboat Hornet, which left Nor folk at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon did not pass Cape Henry until t o'clock Sunday afternoon. One en gineer quit the ship, and then seven Swedes refused to go further than New Orleans. The little vessel all ready for the voyage tried hard to get men. All efforts to secure a crew failed because the pay offered was not considered sufficient. The vessel finally succeeded In getting three American engineers. A revenue cutter, believed to be the Onondaga, passed Cape Henry Satur day evening, and will keep an eye on the Hornet all the way down the coast to New Orleans. The Hornet carried a big deck load of bags said to contain coal. It was denied that the government Inspected the bags, but T. S. Roberts, representing the purchasers of the Hornet, admitted that the vessel was bound to Bluefields Nicaragua, and would not be used as a pleasure craft. The government recently sold the craft to Isaac Starn of New Orleans for $5,100. It cost $117,500 20 years ago. It Is said the vessel was bought for Estrada, to put the Venus, the Madrlz "navy" out of business. Helped a Little Boy. O. C. Phillips, Mt.
