He ex pects to be gone a week or ten days. Attorney S. D. Peterson of Milton, Is transacting business at the county seat today, having come down this morning. Mrs. J. T. Twohy, together with John and Arthur Twohy of Duluth, Minnesota, are registered at the Ho tel Bowman. Attorney Dan P. Smythe returned this morning from Arlington where hr had been called by the illness and death of his father. Attorney c. M. Rader of Walla Walla, came over from the Garden city this morning for the transaction of legal business. Dr. K. A. Mann and wife leave to morrow morning for a trip to Lehman springs. They will be gone two or three days. Sam Miller has returned from an extended visit to Klamath Falls. He says that after all Pendleton Is the Mecca of all good people. Glen Bushee, employed by Twohy Brothers at Coe station, spent last night In Pendleton, returning to the construction camp this morning. T. O. Montgomery and wife leave by automobile tomorrow morning for Iif-hman springs. They will be accom panied by Mrs. J. E. Montgomery and two children. Mrs. M. B. Keys and daughter, Miss Estella Keys have gone to Ta coma, where they will visit for a couple of weeks at the home of Mrs. Keys' brother, William Kugle. Nat Kimball who was a delegate to the biennial convention of the Lambda Sigma fraternity which was held In Detroit, Mich., arrived home last night. He spent several weeks visiting in eastern cities. A suit for divorce was filed today by Susan Lee against George Lee. Tiny were married in Ogden In 1908 and have no children. The wife charges that she was deserted in January of last vear. The other day an enormous flight of swallows passing from Italy north ward over the Alps, near the famous hospice "f St. i.ernard. were surpris ed by a . heavy snowstorm. The monks, observing the helpless birds like a black cloud approaching, open eel the doors and windows, whereup on thousands of the birds swarmed in. seeking shelter against the snow Mi.! storm. The refectory, the cor ridors, the kitchen, and even the monk's cells were crowded by the swallows. The birds remained the whole night, and next morning, the weather being fine, they continued their flight. Many hundreds that did not reach, the hospice were after wards found dead in the snow. Action taken by the buildings and grounds committee of the bond of education yesterday means the demo lition of the old station, the fire house adjoining it and all other build ings on the south Son feet of the block. That is all school property, and It has been leased to a company which will erect upon It a $1,500,000 building. Rembrandt's House to Be Mueuin. Amsterdam. Eddy, is securing right of way deeds for the Stanfield-Coyote cut-off. Mr. Eddy has been here at Stanfield two days and says that the company has already secured 12.5 miles of right of way. The building of the Stanfield Coyote cut-off will shorten the dis tance between Stanfield and The Dalles about eight miles. Pasco, Wash. Pasco is to have an up-to-date packing plant. The con cern which is promoting the enter price is the Kennewick Packing com pany. Mr. Klein, a butcher of this place, is the local manager. A big cold storage plant is being constructed on Mr. Klein's place, two miles west of town, and a large force of men are engaged in rushing the work. The local plant, when com pleted, will represent an expenditure of about $20,000. and will be equip ped with the most modern machinery'. The firm owns plants at Pasco, Kennewick. Richland and Kiona, and announces that by combining their interests they will be enabled to give their patrons better service at lower prices. Christensen's friends all along have contended that he was as much a vic tim of Alberti as any .pne else, and few have believed that the former prime minister was personally dishon est. The verdict of the court will, how ever, have no effect on M. Chrlstensen politically. He will never be able to ' hold office again in the Judgment of politicians. The powers of the duma are to he still rurther-increased and it is not improvable that within a few years Russia will have advanced in the path of constitutional govern ment until sh.. is abreast of Prussia. This Is the opinion held by many who are high in the favor of the czar. It is stated that his majesty lias fol lowed the work of the duma w ith keen interest. He is convinced that the fact that Russia is less afflicted with active revolutionary ideas than she has Ik t n for many years is due In -treat part to the work of the duma and that a o-ndual extension of the parliamentary idea means safety, pence and progress. Hence it is his intention to extend the scope of par liamentary authority as rapidly as cir cumstances will permit.
