Ird Strathcona and Mount Royal, who has received an honorary D. C. L, from Durham uni versity, h:is been Canada's high com missioner since 1896. The following year he received his peerage. He Is in his 90th year. and. not without reason, has been called the Grand Old Man of Canada. Horn in Scotland in poor circum stances, he Is yet another example of northern enterprise. His first vnvage across the Atlantic took S days and his memories go back to the flourish ing times of the Hudson Bay com pany, w hose service he entered when a youth. Lord Strathcona is an ardent Im perialist, and has done as much as any one to establish and maintain the affection existing between Can ada and the mother country. Dur ing the South African war he raised at his own expense, Strathcona's horse. a large body or mounted troops which did excellent service at the front. Lor, Strathcona in an official statement on the subject of emigra tion to Canada, says that many er roneous statements have recently ap peared respecting the restrictions which the government of Canada have foutuld It necessary to Impose. The Canadian authorities are great ly desirous of strengthening the Brit ish element In Canada. All are en couraged to emigrate who are able and willing to work. It Is obvious, however, that proper care must be taken to ensure, as far as possible, that no people who are unfit shall go out and be stranded. There Is em ployment for all In Canada who are fit and willing to work and who can comply with prevailing regulations. Entirely Cured of Rheumatism. Foley Kidney Pills clear the blood of uric acid, and by so doing elimi nate rheumatism from the system. Mr. John F. Two Irishmen in Boat on Ixnigh Fme Report Seeing Monster. Dublin. The leading Irish papers published the other day a queer fish story from County Cavan. It Is said that two anglers In a small boat near the mouth of the river Finn saw an enormous fish approaching from Lough Erne. Its back was above the water and it raised great waves on each side. The men quickly pulled their boat aside, but the fish gave chase and was soon alongside, plunging on the sur face at a furious rate. It appeared tl be fully 10 feet long, with propor tionate girth, and had a large head. The scared men Francis and Phil lip M'Donaugh shot Into a weedy place, whence they watched the mon ster dash up th erlvrr to a small, deej lake, where it disappeared from view. The brothers say that It was un likwe any other fish they ever saw. Crowds of people, it Is stated, are watching for the reappearance of this strange monster of the deep. Ills Ususal Vigor Restored. W. H. Fleming, Litchfield. 111., suf fered' with kidney and bladder trou ble until he took Foley Kidney Pills. "For more than a year I bad back aches and pains across my kidneys, I had also bad spells of nervousness which left me exhausted and . worn out. Foley Kidney Pills recommend ed to me and after taking them I soon noticed a nlmprovement. After some time I found my backaches all gone, my kidneys and back strength ened, tired spells left me and I again feel my usual vigor restored. The nervousness has been overcom eand I feel much better In every respect.' Koeppen and Bros. ITALY'S DREADNOUGHTS TO BE LAUNCHED SOON Rome. It is stated officially that of the four new Italian vessels of the "Dreadnought type, the Pante Aligh- ieri will be launched next summer, and the Conte dl Cavour, the Glullo Cesaro and the Leonardo da Vinci will bo begun shortly. It is believed that fh! first of these last three vessels will be ready in 1914, and the other two in 1913. This may be regarded as the official answer to the recent appeal of the Austrian press to Italy to cease this competition in "Dread noughts." When the stomach falls to perform its functions, the bowels become de ranged, the liver and the kidneys con. gested causing nuberous diseases. LONDON IS TO HAVE SALOON WITHOUT BAR London. A new kind of saloon, on the Continental plan, Is to be opened in London shortly. It will differ from the ordinary "pub" by the ab sence of the Inevitable bar, and will provide the accommodation usually found in Parisian cafes numbers of round tables, where tea, coffee and soft drinks will be served as readily as wine or beer. Customers will be able to take their refreshments at leisure reading the English and Continental papers, In stead of taking their drinks standing and then hurrying away. The London climate, however. Is against the idea of placing some of the tables outside on the sidewalk a custom which Is universal on the Continent. The new cafe-public house Is situ ated on Oxford street, the busiest thoroughfare In the West End, and is to be followed by others In differ en,t quarter of the city.
