ANNIVERSARY OK HAPTISM OP FT 1 1ST MIM AC INDIAN St. John, N. B., June 24. A ter centenary celebration of the first baptismo f a Micmlc Indian was held today at Restlgouche. N. B., and was marked by one of the most Interest ing religious ceremonies ever held in Canada. All of the principal Roman Catholic orders of the North Ameri can continent were represented and many high church dignitaries and civil authorities were present. It was Just 300 years ago, on St. John's Day, 1619, that the aged chief of the Micmlc. Memberton, then about 100 years of age, was baptized into the Christian faith, and his con version was soon followed by the baptism of the entire tribe. The vanishing remnants of the Mic- mac Indians participated in today's celebration. Not more than 600 are left, scattered throughout eastern Canada and on a reservation In New foundland, and It is doubtful If there Is a single pure-blooded Micmlc among them. They still hold to the primitive hunting and trapping and have acquired little knowledge of ag riculture. Perhaps to a greater ex tent than any other Indian tribe they hnve maintained the early baptismal vows of their fathers. Their life Is clean, peaceful and exceedingly reli gious and fire-water is seldom used. The Conservation of Nature's Re sources Applies as well to our physical state as to material things. C. J. Budlong, Washington, R. I. realised his condition, and took warning be fore it was too late. He says: "I suffered severely from kidney trou ble, the disease being hereditary in our family. I have taken four bot tles of Foley's Kidney Remedy, and now consider myself thoroughly cur ed. This should be a warning to all not to neglect taking Foley's Kidney Remedy until It is too late." It is a safe proposition to wager that no ther nation on the globe has a pop ilation as clean as that of Mexico to day. It is possible that this may not he true of other davs of the year, but today this Is the real "spotless town," so far as personal cleanliness concerned. It is the day set astae to St. John the Baptist, and the ex- mple of Immersion set by him is fol wed every June 24 by all pious Mex icans. Whatever may be the attitude of the Mi.xl;in toward ablutions on other ilnvs of the year, upon the birthday of John the Baptist it Is con sidered necessary to take a real bam. Those who believe that a mere sprinkle or Bhowcr over the head and face Is sufficient to pass for a batn other seasons of the year, Know ivint thev ennnot violate the time- honored mandate of the ages to im merse and submerge themselves jn ater on the anniversary of the birui St. John. Menaures were taken by the city authorities to provide sufficient wa ter tn trn around today. It Is figured that about 5.000,000 gallons of water 111 bo enough to give everybody in the federal district a bath. This allows for a population of hair million and figures ten gallons to each bnth. For many this may be too much, but it has been figured as the mean average. Besides, there are thousands who III gb to the creeks, canals and riv ers to bnthe. of Bootlegger pleads Guilty. Fred Shepard of Wendllng, who was also Indicted on that charge, entered a plea of guilty, and will be sentenced some time today. These are the first liquor ' rases to come up in the circuit court for some time, the practice of boot legging having been pretty well wip ed out lately except in isolated cases. After some bitterness Mr. Blair an nounced the hearing postponed until today to give counsel for the DIsalvo Bros, time to look up matters and show the necessity for this mysterious shaving set which was bought by Evelyn a short time before she was cut off her husband's credit list entirely. It used to be the Ananias Club. Now is the Asso ciation of Unwelcome Guests that has been called Into being by the White House. i Nobody really realized how the Unwelcome Guest Club had been quietly growing until the late un pleasantness suffered by Representa tive Francis Burton Harrison. Since that time, statesmen with a thought ful turn of mind have been catalogu ing several citizens who came in as charter members, so to speak. First of all, of course, there Is Gif- ford Pinchot. He used to be the most welcome of the welcome visitors back in the Roosevelt regime, but times have changed since the former forester lined up against Secretary of the Interior Balllnger and the White House now sees him no more. Representative John A. Martin, (Dem., Colo.), feels that he is per sona non grata there too. Martin hasn't been on pleasant terms with the administration since he began ful minating against Attorney General Wickersham on the sale of the Philip pine friar lands. Representative ttrenry T. Ralneo-, (Dem., 111.), is particularly under the presidential ban for his utteranc es along the same lines against not only Attorney General Wickersham, but Henry W. Taft, the president's brother, as well. Delegate Wickersham, of Alaska, charged that the Gugenhcims controll ed the removal and appointment of federal officials In Alaska. Result: his relations with the White House are strained. And, now comes Francis Burton Harrison (Dem., N. Y.), who drew a full fledged membership through his charge In connection with the pre dating of the summary by the Attor ney General of the Glavis charges. What a Summer Cold May Do.
