A SUGGESTION. Sing us something full of laugh ter; Tune your harp and twang the strings Till your glad voice, chirping after. Mates the song the robin' sings; Loose your lips and let them flutter Like the wings of wanton birds Though they naught but laugh ter utter, Laugh, and we'll not miss the words. . Sing in ringing tones that min gle ' In a melody that flings Joyous echoes in a Jingle Sweeter than the minstrel sings; , Sing of winter, spring or sum mer. Clang of war, or low of herds Trill of cricket, roll of drum mer Laugh, and we'll not miss the words, Like the lisping laughter glanc ing. From the meadow brooks and springs, Or the river's ripples dancing To the tune the current sings, Sing of now, and the hereaf ter; Let your glad song, like the birds Overlow with limpid laughter Laugh and we'll not miss the ' words. , James Whltcomb Riley. Within a short time the O. R. & N. depot will be finished and will be ready for occupancy. That depot la not as large as local people would like to have seen constructed. Yet It will be. a fine improvement Just the same. It is arv Improvement for which Pendleton has prayed during many years. Xow why not arrange for observing the opening of the new structure by inviting General Manager O'Brien and other officials of the O. R. & N. company to visit the city and to par ticipate In some manner of a celebra tion under the auspices of the Com merclal club? Such an affair should bo of mutual pleasure and profit. In the business world it pays to "get ac quainted" and of late Pendleton has ben acting upon this theory more than In the past. Why not become closer acquainted with the Harrlman officials. The O. R. & N. company s road 16 a factor of vital Importance In the life of this city. Few people real Ize Just how Important this road is to Pendleton. It is a long established i blessing and the people have come to I uccept it much as they do the sun- shine and rain. I At this time the O. Outwardly commencement is a time when graduates sit in discomfort up on a rostrum, display their knowledge through carefully prepared orations, receive good advice in return and al so the more or less coveted diplomas. But to the serious minded a gradu ating program, such as that rendered by the academy students last night and such as will be given by the high school graduates this evening, has a fascination all apart from the mere surface features. To those interested In educational work and who believe that the world Is guided by the marve lous rays from the lamp of learning commencement time Is always an oc casion of decided Importance. Thoughtful people watch a graduating class with the same interest people see a ship go across a harbor bar to struggle with the sea. In Pendleton this year 80 young men and women receive diplomas from the city's two principal instltu lions of learning. Many of the grad uates will seek no furthei training, but will start at once, upon the duties of manhood and womanhood. The training they have secured here must suffice them. In sailing life's ocean they, must rely upon the discipline and the Information given them by the local schools. It Is too much to say that the sue cess of the 30 graduates will be in keeping with the showing they have made at the academy or in the high school. It sometimes occurs that srhools are places where pebbles be come pouched while diamonds re main dim. It frequently occurs that young men who have been compara tlvely dull in school far outstrip their classmates In later life. But it Is certainly true that students are greatly aided or hampered by the views of life they obtain while In school. Of more importance than the gTades they make Is the spirit with which students face the world. Has the student learned that If he would conquer he must first conquer him self? Has he learned ttiat if he would succeed he must ' not only do right tout must do lots of It?"' Has he learn ed that the mere acquisition of know ledge Is not enough, but that the ac quired knowledge must be applied to useful purposes? Does he know that it he would make an Impression on the world he must "tackle hard," -that the world takes little notice of a listless player? Above all else has the "young lion of ambition" been .aroused? In other words does the It is always a celebratioin of interest am! this year the people of Weston are taking particular pains to see that the pioneers and all other visitors en Joy their stay in that town. Quite a few Pendleton people are planning to attend the picnic. The larger the del egation the better. Pendleton and Weston have many interests In com mon. This city has always been the friend of Weston and many times the people of Weston have shown their friendship for Pendleton. Local peo ple should attend the pioneers' pic nic tomorrow and Saturday and by so doing honor the pioneers and also show that the county seat has an In terest In the sister town on Pine creek. At their general conference the Presbyterians have passed resolutions asking the governor of California to prohibit such a "shameful exhibition as the Jeffries-Johnson fight." Does this .mean that the brethren at At lantic City fear the big fight will not be worth while? (Oregon Journal ) The Pendleton Tribune, lately de ceased, struggled along and endured a hand-to-mouth existence for about 30 years. It had an almost innumer able succession of proprietors and ed itors, most of whom were richer in experience and poorer In pocket after their proprietorship or connection with It. Altogether many tens of thousands of dollars have been sunk in trying to keep it alive and- going. Even an ex-governor of the state and a brilliant writer could not resurrect It from the slough Into which it had fallen, and wherein It gradually sank deeper until it gave up the struggle for existence, and expired, "unwept, unhonored and unsung." Meanwhile another paper in the same town lived, grew, prospered and is known not only throughout Umatilla county but far beyond its borders, as one of the best and most respected and Influen tial newspapers in the Pacific north west. This play was one of three recent ly put on by Miss Forbes-Robertson at Maxlne Elliott's theatre, New York.
