Saturday was a red letter day for this town, for sev eral hundred people from over the county were here to witness the big athletic carnival The oratorical contest at the M. E. church on Saturday night was a suc cess In every detail, the efforts of the different young contestants elicited the warmest applause. The large au ditorium was Jammed to standing room only. Church Dinner Postponed. Instead of being given on May 24 as originally planned the dinner to be given by the ladles of the Parish Aid society of the Church of the Redeemer will be given on May 25. - Cohen Buys Auto. ueon Cohen is now a member of the local auto brigade. He recently purchased a Maxwell runabout and was with the Pendleton contingent at the baseball game at Athena yesterday. Brother Is III. W. L. Thompson, president of the American National bank. la now at Asotin, -Wash., having been called to that town by the serious illness of a brother. Mr.. ThomDSon Is emected home tomorrow. Two Marriage Licenses. Marriage licenses have been Is sued to Emmett J. Kimberltng of King county, Washington and Frances Ma bel Franklin and to Robert M. Town send of Portland and Frances Hays of Pendleton. Fire at Kennewtck. ' Trainmen arriving today on the Northern Pacific branch line train state that when the train left Kenne wlck this morning a fire was raging In that town. Several buildings were in flames and there were indications that it would prove a serious confla gration. Motor Car Was Loaded. The largest crowd yet carried by the motor ear on a regular run was brought up from the west end of the county this morning. Starting with a number of passengers at Umailla Con ductor Cross picked up passengers all along the line until there were some standing In the aisles when the car pulled into the local depot. Mrs. Galllgan Dead. Mrs. Emily E. Galllgan, wife of H. T. Galllgan, formerly a conductor on the old W. & C. R. road, died at her parents home In EI Paso, Texas, on April 21. She was burled in Milwau kee on April 27 by the side of her father and mother. During their stay here the Galllgans made many friends and news of Mrs. Galligan's death has been received with sorrow. News of the death was contained in a letter received by Mrs. E. J. Murphy. Grading Examination Papers. The county examining board, con sisting of County Superintendent Wel les, Mrs. Frank K. Welles, Mrs. Mary Harvey and Miss Belle Wallace, is en gaged today In grading the manu script of those pupils from the coun ty's town and rural schools who took the final eighth grade examinations last week. Sets of examination ques tions were sent out to 152 pupils, which is an unusually large number. First Concert Wednesday. Instead of being . given Thursday night as was originally announced, the first concert of the series to be given by the commercial club and the ladles' clubs will be held at the fair pavilion Wednesday evening. After this week the concerts will likely be held each Friday evening. The concert is to be given by the United orchestra of 15 pieces, and will be for the general public. No admission will be charged. The Widow Jones. -Pendleton people lost by not at tending the production of the "Widow Jones" by Dorothy Morton' and her troupo last night. It was one of the cleverest plays seen here this winter and made a hit with the faithful the ater goers who were out for the Sun day night performance. Dorothy Mor ton is still a pleasing singer and act ress in spite of a slight obesity. Then she has a well balanced troupe and It includes some good 'singers and some mirth producers. Chief among the funmakers is Baron Von Fugengaben Bludekoff. Oscar Walsh as Billle Burk, a commercial traveler, also pleased with his singing, as did also Elvia Rand as Felicity Jones, acquir ed daughter of the Widow Jones.
