It has been officially an nounced that Canon Hicks, bursar of Manchester Cathedral, has been ap pointed to succeed the late Dr. King as Bishop of Lincoln. Canon Hicks may be regarded as the most advanced socialist to be chosen for a bishopric. There are two bishops at present who are claimed by some kinds of socialists' as "com rades." They are: Dr. Gore, Bishop of Birmingham, who declared recent ly that the budget did not go far enoueh. and Dr. Stubbs, Bishop of Truro, a mild type of Christian So cialist, "after the fashion," as he says, "of Klngsley Maurice and Westcott." Canon Hicks the new Episcopal "comrade," goes, however, consider ably further In socialism than these He presided, when acting as a dio cesan mlssloner In the see which he In now to rule, over a socialist meeting at which he said: I have come to the conclusion that all the means of production and dis tribution of wealth, not only In this country, but throughout the world, should be in the hands of the people, to be used by the people for the people." He practiced what he preached to an extent somewhat unusual with so cialists, by determining that the rev enues from certain Investments which he held should be devoted to -public purposes. He Is a strong temperance advocate and an archaeologist of con siderable repute. . View of Lcdd Park Taken From Block 95 The Addition with Character When all of the proposed improvements have been completed in Ladd Park. Portland Anil have no more lieantifnl spot within its limits. Ladd Park exceeds any of the city's parks in natural grandeur, and now it is proposed to improve it with scenic driveways and walks, to enlarge the present natural lake and to create botanical gardens there. Do you realize that property fronting on or adjacent to any high-grade public park is always considered the most desirable for residence purposes? Do you realize that it is an ideal investment for the simple reason that it iz desirable and that property of this sort is very limited in area, and because there are only a few public parks located in the residence district of Portland ? Do you realize that Ladd Park lies in the heart of Laurelhurst, and that values of Laurel- hurst lots in the neighborhood of this park will advance very high just as soon as the proposed improvement for the park have been completed ? And do you realize that the prices of lots in Laurelhurst, close to this park, are at present as low as lots in some of the less improved sections of Portland which are much farther out from town and on only one carline? Do you realize that, under the building restriction, houses fronting on this public park Kiust cost at least from $4000 to $7500 ? Otbero not fronting on the park, but in this section, must cost from $3500 up. Realize this, if you can, and you will then realize the exceptional opportunity which is offered you for investment or home purposes-in Laurelhurst. Laurelhurst,. being improved with asphalt streets from 28 to 48 feet wide, cir.ent Avalks, nine-foot parking strips, shade trees, handsome cluster lights and large water, sewer and gas mains, and with this beautiful natural park in its center, is today the most desirable residence property in Portland. See Laurelhurst for yourself. See Ladd Park for yourself and you will realize all that we have told you in this ad. There are many beautiful spots in Portland, but there are none more beautiful than can be found in Ladd Park, with its fine trees, ravines, lake, etc. There are many very pretty residence streets and districts in Portland, but there are none that will compare wiih Laurelhurst in class of improvements and environments. These improve . ments are being put in NOW. 4 Car Lines to the Property Bear in mind that all ot Laurelhurst South oi EastGlisan street is still selling at original prices The prices on this section have not been raised. They are at present lower than what is being asked for lot3 in other residence sections of the city not nearly so well located or im proved, and with poorer car service.
