This city is to profit theatrically by John Cort'a severance of relations of the overbearing theatrical syndicate and the reward of his long fight Is to be shared with Pendleton and the other cities of the west All America has been stirred by the press dispatches of the Inst few days, stating that Cort and the syndicate had come to the parting of the ways. The great west all points this side the Missouri particularly. Is Inter ested beyond any trust movement of recent years. This is easily account ed for. Whatever Interferes with our entertainment or amusement will al ways receive the major part of at tention. John Cort and his colleagues have been working long and ardently to west to a point where the best In the market could be delivered. It Is well known that the west pays more per capita for Its entertainment than any spot on earth, and in the majority of cases the goods are not delivered. Day of Toor Attractions Posses. Cort has fought for attractions that have been promised, provided ne booked the plays of the syndicate only. In this respect Mr. Cort faith fully kept his word, believing thereby that he was serving the best Interests of his western patrons. The syndicate however, did not live up to the letter of Its agreement. Attractions of a second and third rate nature were sent west,, very few of the big stars crossed the divide, and even at that the supply has been far short of the demand. The change of front, whereby the Shuberts and their fellow managers will be catering to the western terri tory, means a great deal theatrically to every city this side the Rockies. Brilliant Stars Promised. Upon the Shubert list of attractions are such stars as juiia manuwc, Mary Mannering, B. H. Southern, Frank Daniels, James T. Powers. Maxlne Elliott, Marie Cahtll, De Wolff Hopper, Lulu Glased, Jefferson De Angells James K. Hackett, Grace George, Wright Lorimer, Louis Mann and a host of others. In addition also will be found the most attractive mu. sical attractions, and the strongest plays on the market. - The loss will be such plays as "The Roundup," "Ben Hur," "Little Nemo." etc.. and such stars as John Drew, Maude Adams. William Gillette, Blllle Burke. Ethel Barrymore, Marie Tem pest, Marie Doro, Hattie Williams, William H. Crane Rose Stall, Herbert Kelcey and Effie Shannon. In this connection the west can eon sole itself with the thought that very few of the luminaries came this way anyhow. Belasco Holds Power. The rnan who holds the balance of power Is David Belasco the wizard of the American stage, and the one man who for years waged the most bitter war of all against the trust It Is said that his late amicable adjustment of differences was never a personal move, but a diplomatic arrangement of his attorneys whereby he netted a few million dollars as a result of his leading attractions, suddenly be ing permitted to tour In all parts of the country. Now where Belasco will stand on this new move Is a ques tion which is agitating the whole press and profession generally. With such a powerful string of stars as David wartieia, Blanche nates. Frances Starr, Nance -O'Neill and Frank Keenan, and such world-wide successes as The Music Master. "The Girl of the Golden West," "The Heart of Maryland," "Is Matrimony a Failure?" "Rose of the Rancho." "The Easiest Way," "Only a Wife." "Sweet Kitty Bellairs" "St. Elmo,' "The Warrens of Virginia," "The Lily " etc., Belasco stands a most potpnt factor In the little family discord. .. Herein Is a situation whereby the wisdom that has guided John Cort In ail his moves shows up to advantage. Some two months ago George L Ba ker who is "close" to Mr. B'iusco, went to San Frarn'iseo and signed a triple alliance merger between him self (representing certain noted the atrical properties in the northwest), Frederick Belasco proprietor of the Alcazar theater, San Francisco, and the Belasco theater, Los Angeles, and the AH4GMA1& - Soarin (2ompan V -''7 ot. I GEBDkNELSOttAiEDMA m I, - ii fuADrafArAw.ZXrrtMt" III At the Oregon Theater, Sunday Evening, May 8. OF WESTERN TERRITORY Oliver Moroso, proprietor of the Ma- Jectlc and Burbank theaters of Los Angeles. The tenor of this agreement was that these magnates should pool their western Interests, and thereby strengthened, secure all the eastern successes' for presentation on the Pa cific coast and Intermediate points. Noted Successes Listed. Subsequently, Frederic Belasco, who has first call on all of his brother Da vid's plays, went to New York and In addition to arranging for the acting rights to all the. successes upon the Belasco list, also contracted for noted Liebler, Shubert and Frohman suc cesses. The west IS Dig ana weauny euuuB" i to take care of itself. A producing Jl plant of gigantic aimensions win u erected In San Francisco, and tours will be arranged every two or three weeks apart for the Belasco successes and other noted plays upon the list. In August five Pullman cars will leave New York city conveying over 300 noted players to San Francisco. This train will be called "The Belasco Thespian Special " The "thesplans" will' contain some of the most noted dayers of the day upon the stage, and will at once go into rehearsal for the various plays In which they will tour the west. "St. Ebno Will Be First. Within two weeks after the big merger was signed between Belasco Moroso and Baker, Frederick Belasco had purchased the western rights to "St. Elmo," which then was running to overflowing audiences In the Acad emy of Music, New York. He paid 110.000 for a season of 20 weeks. Since then it has cost him over $5000 to protest his property and retire all pi rates and usurpers, and at last a fair field Is assured. Even at this the short tour will net him over 100 per cent upon the Investment, for it is turning people away nightly, and as It will mark the epoch of the first Be lasco play to appear In Pendleton, Its coming to the Oregon on Sunday, May 8, for one performance only, will be an advent In local theatricals, espe cially as Mr. Belasco has promised all his plays for here next season if Pendleton takes kindly to his first of fering. The book has been read for years, and the inspired version used by Mr. Belasco Is a most faithful stage dram atization and In no way similar to the concoctions which have been traded off on the public under the alluring title of St. Elmo. SHIPS BUILT ON THAMES. England's Navy Has Had 1227 Vessels Launched There. London. The laying down of the keel of the new Dreadnought, the Thunderer, at the Thames Iron works, will bring Into existence the 1227th man of war built for the royal navy on the river during four centuries of warship building. In that total Is counted every class of war craft of which there is record; from sailing three-deckers of the olden time, and modern first-class battleships. to gunboats, sloops of war and corvettes of the days of spars and sails and modern orpedo boats and destroyers. At Trafalgar, Jn fact, 11 of the 27 ships that formed Nelson's line of battle were London or Thamee built ships. Eleven out of Nelson's 13 ships at the battle of the Nile had been set afloat on the Thames. Thirteen of Duncan's 16 at Camperdown were Thames built men of war. Seven of .the 17 men of war that took part at the bombardment of Sebastopol In the Crimean war were also Thames built. "fiOLDE.V RULE" DOESN'T WORK ON HOODLUM. Cleveland, Ohio.
