DIFFICULT TO GET STOCKMARKET AT PERIOD BETWEEN THE SEASONS Shipments at Present Coming Princi pally from Montana and Portland Is Competing " Successful y With Others. . Portland Union Stockyards, April 7. There waa a heavy run of cattle again In the yards today, one party bringing jn 17 loads from Montana. Montana Is the scene of the fight between the 'middle west and Pacific coast markets at the present time and the fact that Portland Is drawing heavily upon the cattle of that section Indicates that shippers are actually receiving more money by dealing with this city than with Omaha, Kansas City or St. Joseph. At the present time the trade Is standing between seasons. It is rath er late for fed stuff and yet too early for grass cattle. Therefore the pick ing is light and high prices must be offered to induce shipments In any direction. Good steers, and In fact all good cattle are exeremely scarce and very hard to obtain, even at top prices. Hogs are quoted firm, with small arrivals today, although a fair num ber put In an appearance yesterday. Salps are still being made at $11 11.16. Lambs Sell at $9. Demand for good sheep Is very firm, but little real top quality has been received In this market recently. Today's arrivals of sheep and lambs totaled 169 head. One sale of lambs was made at $9, while sheep ruled at $8 during the day. The latter av eraged from 90 to 95 pounds, while the lambs went at close to 44 pounds. Advices from the Interior are to the effect that quite liberal shipments of sheep and 'lambs will be made to the local market .within the next two weeks. Several shipments will come out of Prlnevllle within that period. Among the Shippers. Frank C. Sharkey came home from Montana with 17 loads of cattle. Fif teen loads were from Dillon and two loads from Red Rock. J. C. Davis made his appearance from Sliedds, Or., with a mixed load of hogs and sheep toaay. Another arrival from Shedds was G. Berdlck who came to the yards with a mixed load of catle and calves. J. S. Flint, the "regular" from Junction City renewed acquaintances In the stockyards today. He brought forward a load of sheep. Today's run of livestock compares with this day In recent years as fol lows: Hogs. Cattle. Sheep. 1910 1909 59 157 485 380 38 125 100 169 117 190S 1907 1906 16 255 1905 450 A year ago today there was a firm tone In all lines of livestock with no change In prices. Today's range of livestock values: Cattle Best steers, $7.00: good steers, $6 5076.60; common steers, $5; stags, $2.5093; bulls. $2.50 $4.60. Hogs Best east of the mountains, $11,00 0)11.10; fancy, fllll.il Blockers and feeders, $9.50. Sheep Best wethers, $SJJ8 25; or dinary. $S; spring lambs, $9; mixed lots, $8. Calves Best, $7; ordinary. f: common, $4.60. HOLD CITIZEN'S AT BAY WHILE BANK IS WRECKED Mitchell, S. P., April 7. Officers with blood hounds are today searching for the four bandits who held at bay fifty citizens of the village of Lane while they worked for an hour try ing to blow open the vault of the Citi zen's State bank. The noise of the explosion aroused the villagers but they were kept bnck by the robbers, who were armed with rifles. The vault refused to yield and the men were compelled to abandon their work without getting a dollar. The quar tet then stole n horse and buggy nnd escaped. At the opening of the market this morning there was a strong disposition to sell wheat and in the May there' was an Initial loss of S-4c a bushel. ' This was the only sever spell of weak- ness shown at the start. July being ' 1-Sc lower and September unchanged 1 as compared with yesterday's closing. 1 Increasing cloudiness was reported today through the entire middle west wheat belt and this gave the market its early weakness, Foreign markets were generally lower although Budapest held an ad vance of 1-4 at the closing. Senator Bourne's plan to make It legal for homesteaders in semi-arid regions to ' remain off their claims, but requlr- ' ing them to bring half the land under ! cultivation, has attracted attention In otiier states. One man In Minneapn. lis has deterniine.l to go to Oregon 1 on the strength of its allurements. He ' thus wrote to Senator Bourne: "Minneapolis Minn.. March 21. F. MILTON. "Minneapolis, Minn." BRITON'S FEAR ROOSEVELT Wn.L HIT THEM NEXT London. English politicians arc apprehensive lest Roosevelt spring his next sensation on English soil. For publication, they conveniently express extreme pleasure over his coming visit May 16, but there Is an Ill-concealed fear that Roosevelt will lose another bolt here such as those he did nt Khnrtonm. Cairo and Rome. Despite their anxiety political leaders nnd the people hove the greatest ad miration for Roosevelt's fearlessness. It Is deemed significant that 40,945.06 250,000.00 19,261.25 10,000.00 273,361.87 $2,126,899.92 .? 250,000.00 189,985.90 237,500.00 19,002.60 . 1,430,411.42 $2,126,899.92 Roosevelt's itinerary Is so arranged that he will be in England during a critical political situation, when an election possible may be In progress. Few believe that tno colonel will be able to refrain from voicing his sentiments in regard to the British politics and it Is believed that ex pressions coming from him might do much toward Influencing the out come of the elections. It is recognized, however, that there is no use to try to prevent him from talking freely on whatever pleases him as a result the prevallling feeling of apprehensiveness In politi cal anticipation as it is known that his opinions, publicly voiced, are certain to have far reaching consequences 'S DRIVEN MAD BY A THREAT OF DEATH Paris. "You are condemned to death," signed by the hand of an Apache, was the notice which a young workman received one day in a seal- ed envelope. The mysterious message had such an effect on his mind that it actually drove him mad, and, worse than all, when he was released from an asylum after he had been cured, he enjoyed his freedom only a few days Derore he was stabbed to death, prob- ably by the same hand that had writ ten the threat. A few years ago the young work invited him to share in their revels. He thus learned that the money was the proceeds of robbery and murder, and when he was arrested with the Apaches he told all he knew about the crime. He was acquitted as hav the above message. Having a very im pressionable mind, he left the quarter nnd as he had to go through his mlli- ,ar' service at a place some distance from Paris, he felt safe for two years at least. But when he returned to Paris the same mysterious message was received. It drove him frantic and for some months he was taken care of in an asylum. At the end of that time he returned to Paris, but settled In a different nuarter. The third dav after his arrival he ventur- ed out for a walk with a friend of his, and was standing in the street talk ing to him. when some one ran by and stabbed him with a stiletto near the heart. He fell down and died in a few minutes, while the murderer es caped In the darkness. The Apaches bad carried out their threat of re- ! venge. Read the "Want" ada today.
