UUKAT HELD BY V. S. FARMERS Government Report Sliows Tliat Growers Hold Back 23.5 Per Cent of Crop A Sharp Advance Is Shown. Chicago, March S. Wheat opened generally weak with a los9 of a cent for the May, but closed very strong 1 to 2c a bushel higher than yester day. Issuance of the government report a few moments previous to the clos ing caused a big stampede to cover whatever shorts were found. While the government report shows that farmers hold 1,000,000 bushels more wheat than estimated by B. F. Snow last week, the report shows 10,000,000 bushels less than estimated by Mod ern Miller yesterday. The latter re port caused the stampede to sell yes terday. After the opening the position of the pulls became more secure in the wheat pit, and by sharp movements the May advanced to $1.13 or 2 718c above the opening. It afterwards dropped back to $1.12 1-8, where It closed a cent above yesterday. Foreign markets were weak and generally lower today. Liverpool opened and closed unchanged to l-4d below yesterday. Women who have pur chased expensive headgear to wear at the banquet to be given President Taft by the Irish Fellowship elub hero March 17, are peeved because the committee has announced that no wo men will be allowed to wear hats In the banquet hall. Following the an nouncement of the edict, Chairman James O'Shaughnessey said: "I can Imagine how a woman feels who hns bought a $180 hat to- wear on such an occasion. It was hard for the committee to bring itself to Issue the edict, but It had to be done. There Is only a limited amount of space In any hall. We figured It up mathe matically that one woman's hat takes up the space of two and a quarter persons. There would bo no room for the waiters to get around " FORESTRY STUDENTS TO HELP UNCLE SAM Seattle, Wash.
