He ate a quantity of candy Sunday and since that time has been In a comatose condition. He has not been asleep all the time but he has been in a stupor nnd at times has been difficult to arouse him sufficiently to give him medicine. The physician attributes the condition of the boy to the candy which he does not think was good and whlrhS evidently contained some kind of poison. Advices from Alaska state that the Tom Lloyd expedition for the ascent of Mt. Mc Klnley will begin the actual climb this week or early next. The party left Fairbanks last December and estab lished a base of supplies preparatory to the effort 'to reach the summit. If the project is successful, it is expect ed to establish the truth or falsity of Dr. t'ook's claim of having reached the top of the mountain. The nip, while not exactly in the nature of a wagei- was undertaken by l.loyd. an old-tiiiTe miner, to prove that it is practical. W. II. The members of the party are Tom Lloyd. Robert Horn, W. R. Taylor, Charles McGonigle, C. E. Davidson and William Lloyd. The latter, how- ver, will not participate In the actual limb. 'GOD IS XO RESPECTER OF PERSONS' LEDFORD Evangelist Ledford at the Baptist church last night preached on Cor nelius the Gentile. He gave an expo sition of the 10th chapter of the Acts. "God Is no respecter of per sons," he said. Whoever "fears God"" a accepted with him. Cornelius was a God-fearing man and God had heard his prayer. "He was God's man." Peter was sent to bring him a mes sage or greater ngm ana a Digger biessing. The evangelist sang "There's Power In the Blood." The Bible reading this morning at 10 o'clock was upon the power of the Word of God. It was one of the best meetings of the revival. The service tonight at 7:30 will be one of special interest to those wanting to know the wav of salvation. Loss of Prestige In Naval Circles. Worries Parisian Diplomats. Paris. France has definitely re nounced her ambition to figure among the great navies of the world. The naval program adopted by the government is a program of renun ciation, that is the argument of the "blue-water school." Exclusive of the ships employed on distant stations, France "has only 24 units to put in line of battle. Whereas, formerly, she occupied the second rank among the nations, she has now descended to fourth rank and pres ently, no doubt, will fall to the fifth, immediately after Japan, so that she will be definitely relegated to head the list of second class navies of the world. Meanwhile Germany is consenting to enormous sacrifices at the bidding of the emperor. The result, the French experts insist, is deplorable. It means that in a future war, if Eng land remained neutral, the Germans could land a force at Havre and pro ceed to the attack of Paris by the Seine- valley, as well as meeting the troops of Franc on the esatsni rentier. Plan World Convention. Washington, March 9. Nearly all the details have been completed for the great World's Sunday school con vention to be held here May 18-24. Acceptances have been received from, churchmen and religious workers all over the world!, who will discuss sub jects pertaining to the Sunday school in all its branches. John Wanamaker, the merchant prince, will be among the speakers. Mme Anna Rogstad, the first wo man member of the storthing, which is the lower house of the Norwegian parliament, was a tea-cher in one of the primary grades of the public schools In Christiana when elected. Koeppen Bros. Tordially invite the'ladies to step into their store and be taught free of charge how. to make the very best Vanilla Flavor ings, and they may take home with them a free sample to see how good it is. Fifty cents worth of material will make one quart of flavoring and we sell nothing less than that amount, but you can make it up in small quantities and the balance will keep for future use. The process is new, the flavor supreme, expense subnormal. The Drug Store That Serves You Best There is no doubt that land in Polk county Is as fertile and as well adapt ed to fruit raising as that of any country in Oregon, says the Dallas Observer. As a place to raise apples, pears, prunes and cherries, Polk county is willing to take a change on the blue ribbon. The Observer asserts that land In Polk county, equally good with that in several adjacent counties, can be bought nt about half the price, and Is certain to advance rapidly In value. .Toy!. Easter Hats Are Cheap. New' York Fashionable milliners are showing this season's Easter bon nets, jn gorgeous array, and they are chonper than last year. This com parative economy, however, Is only for the woman whose taste runs to neat hearr of a quiet nature. For the faddists, there are many new and expensive creations, chief of which is the chantleeler effect. A Fifth avenue Importer, who received his last big consignment from Paris today, says spring hats are smaller, with higher crowns, and summer hats are to be larger with lower crowns. Early spring indications point to a revival of the epoch romantique to ward the 1830 period Influenced by the beauty and richness of the an cient cashmere shawls, so much ad mired by the belle dames of that time. The tendency to vivid color ings of the Orient. India and Egypt, nnd the far east, has already been noted, and the employment In abund ance of flowers characteristic of these colorings gives a brilliant effect to the spring hats.
