In one instance, for cows. The lot of cows that went at $4.76, while very light, averaging 982 pounds, was of extra select quality; a sale of 16 bead of good stuff that averaged 1060 pound being made 25c under the extreme top. No Fancy Steers Were Offering. No real fancy steers were offering In Stockdule market today und the best taat enme did not bring more than 16.25. Several loads went at this fig ure; all being classed as good quality ty the official censor of the Livestock Exchange. Foreign markets failed to enthuse, although generally speaking they were higher for the day. Liverpool opened l-2d higher and closed with a gain of 3-8 to l-2d over yesterday. Evidence Is multiplying, that the price of wheat has advanced to a height which makes further advances difficult unless some strrfng bull lead er Is found who Is willing to take long chances of ultimate success. White at present there are some lending .Interests on the bull side, few of them are giving tho market much support except on scattered occasions. Crop damage news will likely prove the great factor In wheat price making from this time forth and although parties in the southwest are generally giving out uniform views of damage bv the protracted winter, still the trade has not lost its head and forced j uiy sensational advance. . News from Argentina Is favorable to the bull side of wheat as Is the crop advices from this mountry but the trade Isnt present, banking on the huge supplies In the hands of produc ers as will be reported by the govern ment next month. May received the only support nt the opening of the market this morning and advanced to $1.14 5-8 or a mere' fraction' above yesterday. The strike was made two days ago at which time M. J. In addition to the regular price for thp sinkin.g of the well, a bonus of $1.00 per foot for the depth of the well and in addition 5,000 shares of tho Eastern Oregon OH & Gas com pany's capital stock. There has been received at Ontario a large shipment of cement which is to be used In the encasing of the pipe In the well and Mr. Hunt's visit to Portland s largely In connection with the placing of this cement and In l making other sinkings in the vicinity of the well which is now proven to be a commercial success. The first test of a re inforced concrete parapet as a means of defense against the attack of high power projectiles has Just been con- 1 eluded at the Randy Hook proving grounds, The tests conf irmed the mathcmatl- ! cal calculations of the penetrative I pmvwr of the 12 Inri guns. A concrete wall 20 feet thick and reinforced with heavy steel beams was pierced by this gun at its high velocity. It Is computed that the projectile will penetrate nt its greatest speed a wall 23 feet thick before Its power Is spent, and experiments at Sandy Hook ! confirmed this estimate. i The tests will be continued to ascer"- ; tain the penetrative power of all I weapons with which all modern men of war are equipped, including the 13 and 14 Inch guns. It is expected to determine by these experiments the extent to which concrete will be used in fortifications. Housewives may nithn a few months be compelled to pay a dollar for an ordinary broom is the discouraging prediction of the large manufacturers of this commo dity in southern Indiana. Evnnsville factories are reported to be offer ng three times the normal price, for broom corn, and find it an rxiremely scarce article even at that figure. It Is stated that with the sup ply now- in hand, if an equal division could be made, there s only enough broom corn in the country to supply two brooms to each family, and the next harvest Is months away. Many farmers in the vicinity of New Albany, encouraged by the pre vailing high prices, will supplant oth er crops this year with broom corn. Leopold's Miiul Lauded. New York.
