II. Hevf Ht'rbort O. Buss, deposed pastor of First llaptlst church of Colfax, AVash., ami his wife, .Virginia A. Buss, now residents of Kansas City, Mo., have Instituted an action for $101,600 dam ufirs in the United States circuit court hero against F. M. English and 12 prominent residents of Colfax. It U charged that the defendants conspir ed with trustees of the church to de fame tho character of Buss and his wife, also assaulting and ousting them from their parsonage, compelling them to defend themselves from un warranted arrests and criminal ac tions, abrogating a contract with the church, and, finally, forcing their, de parture from the state of Washington on account . of . the scandal and re proach heaped upon them. Colonel William H. Plummer, who appears a counsel for Buss, says tho complainant was regularly ordained a minister of the gospel of the Bap tist church on November 12, 190S. and has since then and Is now engag ed In church work. He was called to First Baptist church at Colfax on No vember 10, 1908, and served until the latter part of May, 1909. A clash came on June 7, 1909, when English and others, acting in conjunction with the trustees of the church, adopted resolutions to discredit their pastor, .also making statements that he was not fit to preach, that he W not an ordained minister of the gos pel and could not legally perform the ceremony of marriage, also declaring that he Is a faker. Echo, Jan. 10. A deal of some im portance was transacted today when J. Frank Spinning bought the entire stock of drugs, stationary and toilet articles of John Dorn. Mr. Spinning will take charge of the stock as soon as the invoice can be taken. He will also remove his entire line of goods to one of the spacious sale rooms In the Dorn building. Mr. Dorn will retain eighteen feet of the" floor for the post office. 8. W. Rethlefson and wife, of Port land are visiting with his brother Jas. P. Rethlefson at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Spinning. Mr. and Mrs. Rethlefson are on their return home from a trip to Germany, having been away since July, last year. From here they will go to Walla Walla and visit their daughter, Mrs. Ed Clossen, be fore returning to Portland. Mr. Roy Ward returned this morn ing from Pendleton, accompanied by his bride who was Miss Rose 'John son of Clinton, Iowa. They were married yesterday in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Ward are stopping at pres ent at the Hoskins hotel. The basketball team of Echo, ac companied by a party of young folks went by team to Hermiston Saturday night to play the Hermiston team. We have not heard much about the trip for the Echo boys were defeated by a large majority. Prof. L. W. Keeler attended the County School Board convention held in Pendleton on the 8th. E. E. El der, chairman of the Echo school board, was sent as delegate from this place. ' Wm. Slusher has two bands of sheep here wintering them on Miss Un thank's farm two miles west of Echo. Having bought one hundred tons of hay from the Gillett Bros. Al Slusher Is In charge of the sheep.
