December 2. (To the Editor.) It has come to us through reliable chan nels that the city authorities who re- j centiy made a so-called moral raid upon one of the hotels In Pendleton, are endeavoring to shield themselves from public criticism by asserting that they acted upon complaints made by us as a social purity committee of the local Woman's Christian Temperance Union. In Justice to ourselves, the public and the organization to which we are proud to belong, permit us to state the facts. We did call upon the may or to ask' that something be done to ward suppression of the whltechapel district, so-called, especially to re quest that the existing fences there be removed In the Interest of public morals. No other request was made, and no other subject discussed. So far as the hotel which was raided is concerned we beg to say that we nev er heard Its reputation questioned and any attempt to make us or the W. C. T. U. responsible for the municipal fiasco does that hostelry, as well as the undersigned, an Injustice which w, have a right to resent. MILS. W. S. P.ADLEY, MltS. J. T. HENDERSON, MRS. S. A. LOWELL.
