The Salem Statesman says of the subject of .establishing a permanent rifle range for the state at Salem: Since the establishment of the state military rifle range across the river, there has been some agitation In na tional guard circles as to whether It should be kept at Salem permanently- The Btate has gone to the expense of leasing some land having pits made and installing therein eight tar get racks. The pits were graded out In clay and the rains have In several places done considerable damage to the embankments and walls, making it not althgether safe for target tend ers. The location of the range Is excel lent and provides an almost perfectly level stretch of 1500 yards with the side of the hill to shoot Into, thus making that part absolutely safe to those not directly interesied In the tarc;t practice work. Since the establishment of the rang several expert riflemen have been de veloped among the militiamen of com pany M, which has better facilities for using the range than any other company. The ability of the guards men to shoot accurate and to be of great value to the national guard or ganization generally, has been won derfully Increased on account of the practice received at the range. Now that the target practice sea son Is close at hand and the range Is In need of repairs, there has been some talk of removing the state range to Portland and of spending a large amount of money to put in a first class rifle range for the national guard of Oregon. On the other hand the authorities are also contemplat ing the purchase of the present range and of placing it in a' condition of per manency. The general sentiment In guard cir cles favors the latter project, as Sa- The General Demand of the Well-Informed of the World has always been for a simple, pleasant and efficient liquid laxative remedy of known value; a laxative which physi cians could sanction for family use because Its component parts are knewa to them to be wholesome and truly beneficial ia effect, acceptable to the system and gentle, yet prompt, In actien. Smith, representing the Greater Norrls and Rowe Circus, arrived In Pendleton last evening and during a visit to the Oregsnian office, he said: The Barnum & Bailey circus played an extended engagement in New York this spring, the Ringling Bros, in Chi cago, and the Greater Norrls & Rowe circus, museum, hippodrome and con gress of nations exhibited in San Francisco for 30 days, playing to 279, S73 paid admissions the greatest number of people ever attending a cir cus In that number of days In the his tory of the west. By the new arrange, ment, but one of the big circuses will visit a certain territory any given year. The greater Norrls & Rowe shows were given -the entire territory west of the Rockies, and theirs will be the only big show to visit this section of the country this year. Their show has been enlarged to such an extent that It Is now classed and rated as one of the three great amusement en terprises of the world. There are over 600 people with the show; 350 horses, and It requires 40 double length cars to transport the parapher nalia, animals and vast army of peo ple from point to point. The entire press of San Francisco were unanimous In proclaiming this etason's offerings of Norrls & Rowe to be the best genuine circus perform ance ever given In that city. That the entile public concurred in this opinion is best evident when the number of paid admissions Is taken Into consideration on their engage ment. Norrls & Rowe purchased ail of the animals at the Chutes in Sari Fran cisco, which Is said to be the greatest animal deal ever consummated by one firm in this country. All of the acts this season are new to the west, never having been seen here before, and most of them ore right from Europe direct. Their big shows will exhibit in Pendleton Thursday, May 14. lem Is more centrally located and the expenditure by the state would not be so great. The land on which the present. range Is situated Is, for the greater part of little value as agri cultural land and It is wonderfully adapted to its present use. At any rate, Captain Murphy of company M has been authorized by the military board to have the pits and target racks placed In a suitable condition for target practice ,for the coming season and the militiamen of Salem will shoot on the range, re gardless of where the remainder of the national guard of the state devel ops its shooting abilities.
