Hay ing Is now general, and notwithstand ing considerahle clover was damaged by the rains of tho previous week, the hay crop bids lair to be an avei age one. Pastures are good, except In some houlhern sections, where the ranees are drying vtt and feed is be coming short. Pall wheat continues, lo ripen nice ly, and In some few localities Its har vest haB begun. The crop is llnhler than usual Hi Southern Oregon and in tho Grand Itonde valley; It is below the average In the Columuia river counties east of tho Cascade moun tains, but much better than anticipat ed a month ago. In the Willamette valley It promises to bo as good, if not better, than tho average Spring wheat continues to Improw. and It is heading and filling nicely: the stinw. as a rule, Is rather short, but the heads aie of good size and the berry promises to bo plump and of a good quality. Oats arc doing splendidly and the ciop will be above the average, liar ley has a good color and tho outlook. Is favorable for average yields. Hops, potatoes, onions, sugar beets and gardens have made good progress during the week, and but lew com plaints aie made for damage being done by veimln or other pests. Fruit continues doing nicely; prunes and pears aie especially promising; apples are variable; In some localities the late varieties aro leported good and the early varieties poor, while In other sections good crops are Indicated for both early and lalo varieties, A few correspondents report only a half crop of both early and lale apples, but judging irom all reports It is believed the crop as a whole will full but slightly below Hie average. Alfalfa six aud one-ball' leet high Is the phenomenal growth attained fiom seed planted this sprltig on the Aeils farm, near lliis city. The farm Is now owned by the Walla Walla Meal Company The wonderful growth of this patch ol nlfalfn is due to sub-Irrigation; that Is, the toots of the plan! were at all times Immersed in water from an irrigation ditch which percolated through the soli. The sample brought In was In full bloom, the little blue flowers showing along the branches for three or four feet over a greater area than the height of tho ordinary giowth.
