Craig Makes Some Interesting Observations on Northwest Settle ment Draws a Striking Picture of Population In Different Sections of the United States Says Isthmian Canal Will Give Pacific a Strong Trade Prestige. Mr. A. L. Craig, general passenger The Better Way igen or the Oregon Railway & Navi gation company, visited Tacoma re cently, accompanied by It. M. Hall, advertising agent of the same com pany. Both gentlemen are devoting their energies to the building up of the Pacific Northwest, eays the Ta coma News. Mr. Craig has resided on the coast for two years, having for merly been assistant passenger agent of the Northern Pacific at St. Paul. Mr. Hall was formerly connected with the Bloomlngton, 111., Pantagraph, making a name for himself by his clover advertising work. General Passenger Agent Craig Is lu close touch with the work being done throughout the east to Induce immigration to the Pacific Northwest. PHOTOGRAPHERS. WAS. BOWMAN. Vhone Main ion. .this year at least 50 per cent more: When a slight cold fastens on you in early winter you are apt to regard it "merely as an annoyance not a thing worth serious consideration. You usually feel like taking something syrupy, with per haps a touch of spirits in it, to warm you up and stop the cough. But .there is a better way. The cough, the red eyes and uncomfortable head are not the cold. They are only the symptoms. They.are like the leaves of a weed sticking above ground. The surest way to get rid of them and prevent their sprouting again is to pull up the root You sometimes say, "This cold is all over me." Every cold you have is, to a certain degree, all over you. It. .is evidence of a slight general weakness. It usually steals In on you at a time when the body is a little below its nor mal tone and the surest way to get rid of it is to bring the whole system up to its right level. You may need some medi cine. Your doctor will know. But a mere expectorant will do nothing toward restoring the body to a healthy standard. At the best its action is merely local and gives only tempo rary relief. Scott's Emulsion does this and more. A small quantity of the emulsion taken regularly for a few days will supply the lack of proper nourishment in ordinary food. It is rich in the substances of which healthy . blood is composed, and makes itself quickly felt in the throat and bronchial tubes. It starts the flow of mucous and relieves an ob stinate cough sooner than any expectorant will do. The emulsion does more than rid you of a cough. It rids you of the cold which is the root of the cough. Still more, it helps to protect you against a return of the trouble and against its going deeper. Scott's Emulsion is aptly termed a food-medicine. It contains the nourishing prop erties of the whole cod liver oil, emulsified and combined with the medicinal qualities of hypophosphites, of lime and soda. It is probably more widely recommended by phy sicians for use in coughs and colds than any other prepa ration. So-called wines, cordials and extracts of cod liver oil do not contain the value of the whole oil and are worth less in cases where a pure re liable cod liver oil preparation is needed. Scott's Emulsion has been the standard for over twenty-five years. We will send a sample free to anyone on request SCOTT BOWNE, 499 Paarl St. Naw York. settlers than during 1902 Asked if It were true that the rail toads brought 60,000 homeseekera Into Washington, Oregon and North ern Idaho last year, Mr. Craig- said that In his opinion, judging by the number handled by his road, the num ber was even greater than 60,000. "Yon must bear In mind," said Mr. Craig, "that the number of tickets sold does not represent all of the newcomers. My observation goes to show that the number of infants and children under 5 years accompanying the homcseekors Is very large. These little ones must all grow up, cat and wear clothes, thereby adding materi ally to our Industrial activity. "The timo is ripe for a greater in flux of settlers this year than ever be fore. Not only has the work of tho railroads been continued, but the real estate men of tho coast have a better appreciation of the situation and are devoting much of their time and en ergy toward advertising their respect ive localities. This work supplements that of the railroads, and, of course, the more the merrier. In Oregon a well as Washington we are locating n large portion of the newcomers In the eastern part or the state, where they become producers and add to the prosperity of the entire Northwest. Las,t year 'he big crowds of home seekers were handled while the colo rist rates were in effect, durini; March, April, September and Oclo her." Bv an ant Illustration Mr. Craig j-olnts out that theie is absolutely no danger of tne Norinweai ouiujuihb too many Inhabitants. The anthra cite coal region of Pennsylvania lias an area of 486 square miles, with a population of 600,000 people, and when the state of Washington alone is RPttled un at the same rate it will contain mote people than now reside within the confines of tho United Ktatps. It Is only fair to state, how ever, that oven Mr. Craig, with all his energy, experience and good ad vertising does not expect to bring about a similar density of population in the Pacific Northwest In a single rear. Nevertheless, those who Know him are well aware that he will do his lair share. General Passenger Agent Craig Is a thorough believer in the future com b! nreatness of the Pacific KnrthwesL Following the completion of the Panama canal, in the course of 10 years or so, he polntE out that the coast should do practically all of the wholesaling for that part or tne unit ed States lying west of a line drawn about, midway between Chicago and San Francisco, and touching Denver, for Instance. In the north this line woiiltl oaaa through Eastern Montana, Briefly stated, the opening of the ca not ohrmlii nneratfi to enable the rnnst wholesalers and Jobbers to lay frelcht of all kinds throughout the great territory named at lower rates than it can be hauled from the Atlantic seaboard by all-rail. Willie this prospective revolution In coast jobbing is about 10 years off, there seems to be good reason for believing that It will follow tho development of the Oriental traffic now In progress nnrt In tho years to come becomo oni of the premier factors In Pacific coast prosperity.
