THE CROP IS SHORT FARMERS FIND WHEAT RUN NING BELOW EXPECTATIONS. There are Many Reasons for This Failure, Which is but Slight, the Wind Having Done Most of the Damage. Farmers are somewhat disappoint ed in tho wheat yields all over Uma-'appies ln tho Hood River and Ash tilla county. One prominent citizen in(1 districts " is excellent. Karlv who keeps himself in close touch with the situation made the assertion last evening that wheat was falling short an average of Ave bushels or more to the acre. Thin In n. lnn? lnr.R hnr novortlin. less is said to be true. This shortage is mostly due to the recent wind j storm which shattered the grain so fearfully. However, tho wind 1h not entirely responsible for the shortage. " .. r Many fields too green to be Injured by the wind is threshing several bushels short of what it had been guessed to turn out. iioi mii is onon. It ia not claimed that all t.lifi whnat fields of the county will thresh short of what was expected by the farmer but most of them will and the short age will cut quite a hole in the gen eral yield of the county. In fact the yield will fall 1-5 short of what it was expected unless places not yet heard from come to the front with bumper yields and even up the smaller yields. Whea where machines are thieshing that was guessed to make 25 bushels to the acre is mailing 20, wheat thought to turn out 30 bushels is making 25, and 40 bushel wheat is turning- out 35, etc. This is the case all down the lino. All Number One. Yet, the loss of yield will some what be evened up by the fact that all the wheat this season will pass for No. 1. It is said that hardly crop in the county will be sold for anything less than first class. This means the top notch price all tho season. If a man has good, No wheat and his neighbor has wheat almost as plump, but with a little shriveled grain dust enough to make it second class the fellow with the second class thinks his grain Is as good as the other fellow's and feels bad when his neighbor gets a few cents more on the bushel. This sea son there will be little of this feeling as one man's wheat is as good as the other. A Little Smut From some quarters comes a com' plaint of smut in the wheat, but this is only confined to certain localities and small fields, WEEKLY CROP BULLETIN. Report of Department of Agriculture for 8tate of Oregon, United States department of agri culture, climate and crop bulletin of the weather bureau, Oregon section, fro the week ending Monday, Aug ust 4: Except a few light showers last Wednesday and Thursday in the northwestern portion of the state, no rain has fallen during tho week. The temperatures have been season able, and there has been an abund ance of bright sunshine, making al together, excellent harvesting weather. The fall wheat harvest is nearly completed in Southern Oregon, well advanced ln the Willamette Valley, and making good progress in the eastern sections of the state. Threshing will be general this week. Snrlng wheat is filling and ripening nicely. The oat crop .promises to be above tho average. In the Umatilla district, wheat will probably turn out better than expected a few weeks j ago. In the section about Marlon county it is not thought the fall grain yields will be as heavy as last year, but the spring-sown grain is doing nicely. In some few sections of I-ano county the reports arc that club spring wheat is badly injured by rust. Hops are doing well and no com plaints are made of lice being suf ficiently numerous to cause damage. All late crops, including corn and po tatoes, would be benefited by rain. Pastures are drying up fast, but stock continues in good condition. , The outlook for a good crop of late caches and blackberries aro nlenti- fUj jn tne markets. ARTISTS IN CONVENTION.
