Never one to sit on the sidelines of any pressing issue, in 2003, Gil rolled up his sleeves and got to work as the co-founder of the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), the largest col- lection of Black fi lm crit- ics in North America. As the organization’s pres- ident, he oversees the annual AAFCA Awards, which has become a rec- ognized fi xture of the Hollywood awards sea- son. It’s always a plea- sure speaking with you. KW: What inspired you to write Book of Black Heroes?
