M. rettingill & Co. of New York and Boston. Th Old Year. The year 1803 trill be memorable for some of the most remarkable natural phenomena of which there is any record, btormj nd tornadoes in v.rioas port.o, s o the world marked its earlier months, taakes and volume .gtaUon that have been as fn-quent m wine Entries as any mentioned in history md extended over a larger part of the arth than at any former time, have di.tin-nished its middle months ; and teolic displays in the heavens, more brilliant than ever before ob served aud so general as to be re ported in Europe and all parts of America, have rigged latter month-. It has indeed been a most eventful year-and yet the mails and the wires continue to be burdened with stories of the disturbances of na ture of floods and whirlwinds, furious tides and trembling of the earth. & the 15th to the ISthof Octo ber or rather, about the time when there were earthquakes in the Last Indies and "tidal waves' m the Sand which Islands, a storm of wind and rain destroyed the City of Ala mo's and several towns in boiiora and Lower California, sweeping them away and causing loss uf Me In J'lawl, Germany, and Bucharest there have b.eu Ireah earthquakes, and a remarkable depression and sub sequent rising of the waters of the Baltic has given occasion in Europe for interesting scientific speculation. Mexico, too, has had earthquakes, Ihocks having been felt near San Luis Potisi recently. To crown all there comes a fresh and exceedingly Violent eruption of Vesuvius. What are now called surprise parties became quite fashionable in England about the year 1800, when they were called " Picnic Suppers." The bill of fare was prepared each dish being numbered and the sub scribers to the entertainment drew lots, and each was required to furnish the dMi marked against the number he' tlreih This may be useful as a hint to persons getting up surprise puties, which, by the way, are the iuost sensible species of entertainment tioV in vogue, because the entertainer is required to furnish only the par lors, and is put so no trouble to pre pare for the guests, while the visitors furnish tiieir own supper aiid music, and thus equalize expenses. In that wav people who live in a pleasant house, but who cannot afford to pre pare an entertainment entirely at their own cost, may still receive their friends occasionally, and enjoy a social fej-tive evening. As Washington Hall, en Thurs day evening next, the Amateur l)ra matic Club of this city will make its debut, under the management of Mr. James A. Smith, for their own (benefit. We hope that the edlbrts of it he ladies and gentlemen who have thus given their tune and services to create amusement worthy of the city, ?nny Ue justly appreciated, and that upon th's occasion Wash'mgtonIIall Vviil be .crowded. There is now in this little city some 1,500 inhabitants, and six or eiht.Bociety organizations Something "is .going on every evening, and not a month scarcely, passes, but & ''benefit" is givea. These facts indicate the progress of our place and none the least deserving of a benefit" is the AuiatetirClut), whose individual me.Ribers have ever been ready, on previous occasions. We .have no official authority for stating the programme, but believe it to be gen erally understood that "Dombey and cSon" will be the leading play. At a regular meeting of Multno mah Lodge No 1, A. Death ofFrtJcrltk CUnun. A melancholy event transpired in this city at 4:30 p. sr. on the 23d, which has transformed our Christmas holiday into a day of mourning. " Brother Fred. Charman is dead 1" The sentence falls like a pall upon our citizens, amongst all of whom Mr. Charman was held dear, and the sor row depicted upon every countenance shows what a real loss the community has sustained. For several days and evenings previous to his death, our streets were the scenes of anxious groups of men, conversing together fearful of what is, and hoping for what was without hope. His dis ease, as we, are informed by Dr. Bar clay, attending physician, was a very complicated one, and of rare occur rence, being a lack of vitality of the blood, which terminated in congestion of the brain. So dangerous was the case that Dr. Barclay attended him constantly day and night for about one week prior to his death, having the assistance and counsel of other able physicians, all teuding to the same conclusion respecting the disease. What a painful chapter is this, the closing one of 1SGS in our little city. Ilnndreds -of sorrowing hearts will mingle their sympathies with those of the family of this noble, generous hearted man to day as all that reN mains will be borne to its Gnal rest. Mr. Charman was a Worthy Past Grand of Oregon Lodge No. 3, I O. O. P., and has for several years filled the office of Treasurer, to which posi tion he was again placed in nomina tion on Wednesday night of last week, just one week prior to his death ; but alas, his teni of office here has finally and forever closed, but he will most surely sit at the right of the Most High Noble Grand, in another sphere. He was also a member of Ellison Encampment, and of Multnomah Lodge No. 1, A. F. and A, M , and both orders will to-day unite, in con veying his rema'na to the tomb, in Masonic Cemetery. At his special request Oregon Lodge will lead in the ceremonies. All bvothers of both orders are requested to be pres ent. Services will take place at the Congregational Church, at 1 1 o'clock. a. m., Rev. E. Geary officiating. The fraternity from Portland are expected to be present, as the following from the Herald of yesterday would show: We regret -t6 learn that Fred. Charman died at Oregon City yes terday evei)irir at 4 o'clock. The news of his death was immediately telegraphed to this city, causing many sad faces among those who knew him. Being a member of the Odd Fellow Brotherhood, we learn it is the intention of the several lodges of this city, together with' the Encamp ment, to attend his funeral, which will take place at Oregon City, on Friday, at 11 o'clock. Samaritan Lodge resolved last evening to at tend in a body, and the members of Ilassalo, Minerva, Orient (East Portland,) and the Encampment are requested to meet at Odd Fellow' Hall, this evening, to make arrange merits to charter a steamer for the occasion, which will leave here at about eight o'clock in the morning, it is expected that there will be a general turn-out of the brotherhood to pay the last sad rites to a worthy and distinguished brother. The Ladies of St. Paul's Epis copal Church, in this city, have set themselves at work about raising a sum of money with which to construct a rectory, and thus far they have suc ceeded admirably, having a fund suf ficient for the purchase of the mate rials. The building will be construct ed upon the church block, and it will be the ilrst rectory in this diocese. The parish is small, but prospering. . -e- Our special reporter requests us to say, that in the late runaway over ike Canemah road Mr. Wilhoit's team vas not injured. The only damage resulting from that casualty was the loss of a coffee pot, the indis peusibie artk.de to any camp. - The small pox is surely ap proaching us from both the north and south. Citizens should at once make preparations for safety, and preven tion. Xo paper will be issued from this office next week. The holidays can be enjoyed by the Printers in no other way.
